Fuel consumption on small DIS

Maybe somebody can explain more about replacement from 1.4TDI (0) or petrol (2) to 1.2TDI (5) and the alerts related to the engine or other parts of the car...

For info, all A2 1.2Tdi's had full DIS which gives average and current fuel consumption. Selection is by UP/DOWN and the average figure is reset by a button on the underside of the RH stalk. For the Lupo 3L, both values can be seen at the same time, the current fuel consumption being displayed on a gauge.

how did this stay under the radar for so long?
Hi Guys,

I've known about this change for some years, but have never thought to mention it because I didn't consider it to be especially useful.

Personally, I don't like fuel efficiency displays because I become obsessed with them. This is unquestionably a fault of mine and not of this feature! If you give me a car with a fuel efficiency display, I immediately start playing the game of 'how little fuel can I use?'. I don't want that in my A2, because I love driving the car. So, even though I have retrofitted DIS and Colour DIS to hundreds of A2s across Europe, I just have the basic cluster in my own car. It allows me to drive with a freedom that my brain won't otherwise allow.

From my experimentation, my conclusions are as follows...
  • When you first switch on the ignition, the display shows the average fuel consumption. What I don't know is whether this average is for the last 1000 miles, or the last 100,000 miles or since the car was new. At the time of writing, my TDI has done 232,000 miles and shows 74.0 miles per imperial gallon. I have not yet found a way to reset this, either with the black stalks that pop through the fascia of the cluster or with VCDS. I also know of no way to connect the DIS controls to a non-DIS cluster; the electrical contacts don't exist. The result of this is that, if you have to change your cluster (due to electrical failure of some variety), you inherit the fuel economy figures from another vehicle (unless you take out a second mortgage and buy a new cluster from Audi).
  • When the car starts moving, you see instantaneous fuel efficiency, with a calculation delay of approximately 1 or 2 seconds.
  • It does not appear to be suitable for the AUA and BBY engines due to the behaviour of the EPC light. Of course, if you don't care about the EPC light, it works, but in the UK this may create problems with the MOT. I have not yet tested it on the 1.6 FSI cluster, but I expect to see the same problems with the EPC light. By enabling this on a petrol cluster, you're effectively entering conflicting coding, so it's hardly surprising that something goes wrong.
Whilst it is cool that the basic cluster can do this, I regretfully confess that I find it a bit pointless. After 232,000 miles, the average fuel efficiency displayed when I start the car never changes. Maybe after driving another 100,000 miles I will see a 0.1mpg increase? When I start driving, I see instantaneous fuel efficiency. If I'm driving uphill or accelerating, I get a disappointing figure. If I'm driving downhill or decelerating, I get an excellent figure. That's it. So, in my own car, I keep it switched off and have never added it to my array of A2 upgrade services because I consider it to be a novelty with little meaning. Of course, as long as you've got a TDI, I'm happy to switch it on for anyone.

Kind regards to all,

Tom

I am an altruist.:) I learned and decided to share. Let everyone decide for himself whether he needs it or not .. But the fact must be the property of the A2 community. ? A2 is gaining popularity in our country. they are few. People who can help with advice or repair - even less

Assuming that the data being discussed here matches the factory DIS display as fitted at the time, I can answer that question with a fair guess at accuracy.
I bought my A2 in 2016 (AUA, just under 70k) and drove it back from Edinburgh to Norwich. The DIS at that point was displaying 38.something mpg, and over the following two years fluctuated between 36 and 38 mpg. I never reset the DIS.
Last summer I had a new exhaust fitted including the rear cat by a company just outside Bristol. By the time I was back in Norwich my DIS had moved up to an average of 42.3 mpg. I then got the handbook out and reset the average, so I could see how much further it would climb. A quick sprint down a local dual carriageway and back home gave me an average of 45 mpg. Now I've gone back to my usual driving, and my average (which I've not reset again) tends to display at 43 mpg for local diving, 44-45 for faster longer journeys on A roads.
My car appears to retain little more than one tank of fuel's worth of driving in its long term average calculation. I have subsequently started using Fuelly, which shows a slight increase in variation, but an overall average that is pretty close to what the DIS tells me.
You are right when you say that an mpg average that dated back to when the car was new would be of no meaningful use to anyone, but I'm pretty confident that the average displayed by the A2 does respond to your driving pretty quickly.

I think Steve is correct
The 63mpg in my picture above was after a full tank, so some 500 miles and would have been at or just over 70mpg but the last 120 miles consisted of a fast drive to Liverpool followed by towing a 1.4 petrol A2 back on the B roads. The fuel consumption when towing was noticeably worse even just looking at the gauge going down

So it looks like the value displayed when you stop is the average over the last few hundred miles (not from the beginning of time)
This makes it a lot for useful and is indeed how I use the fuel computer in my focus cc
What I am less happy about is the lack of the EPC light before I start the car
I coded the cluster back to the std coding for a tdi with 34lt tank and the epc light came on and went off when car started
But with the coding telling the cluster it’s a 1.2tdi the epc light is off all the time
Not sure how much of a real world problem this is - opinions community?

Cheers Paul

Does it mean that it wouldn't show any new warning lights during driving? Or is it just the startup-check disabling?

Just to make sure, if i'm using this method to show MPG and start loosing coolant - it wouldn't come up as a warning?
If so, that's an obvious answer for this tweak
no, only the EPC light will not work.
This mod trick the instrument cluster into thinking it as a 1,2 diesel engine, as only the petrol's have EPC then the EPC light is disabled. All other warnings will function as normal (specifically all warning pertinent to the 1.2 TDI)

The snow looks interesting :D

I'm worried about the consumption on my AMF o_O
But I comfort myself that i drive only in the city traffic and short distances when the engine barely reaches operating temperature and my driving style is not calm.

In those cold temps that type of consumption on short runs is to be expected

Is it possible to borrow the hole instrument from my 2001 1.2TDI and use it on my LHD 1.4TDI AMF 2002 or 2003, until Easter, when I will start to do my last attempt to get the ANY on the road again....
I guess I will have to at least code off the 20 liter tank, but what is the code for the 42 liter tank? I cannot find it on the list...

One thing to consider is that the fuel tank level sensor signal characteristics were inverted at some stage (2002?). Other might know more details.

Even if it works, on which I have my doubts, your speedo will be out by more than will be legal. As long as the snow is not too deep, you might find that your 1.2Tdi is your best snow option - thinner tyres! Too deep and it just sits on the snow!
