Fuel consumption on small DIS

Even if it works, on which I have my doubts, your speedo will be out by more than will be legal. As long as the snow is not too deep, you might find that your 1.2Tdi is your best snow option - thinner tyres! Too deep and it just sits on the snow!

RAB
No doubt that the 1.2TDI cut the snow in an impressive way :)

When it comes to the speedo I was a bit surprised that the circumference difference is just 2.57% to the 185x60 R15 that I use on my AMF's.
(it looks to "visually"be much more...maybe I'm fooled a bit by the pepper-pots? )
In Norway it is allowed to have a 5% deviation from what one have in the vehicle registration docs.
My car do 93km/h when the speedo shows 100km/h

I will follow your advice and stop that route. (it's just that I really want to have DIS with instant consumption reading... and we do not have @timmus in Norway....

Do you manage to get hold of aluminium drums for your 1.2TDI ?

cheers

we do not have @timmus in Norway....
Very occasionally, I am in Norway. If there's something you'd really like, I'm sure we can eventually make it happen. I installed a Colour DIS system near Gardermoen a couple of years ago before making ascents of Galdhøpiggen and Snøhetta. The two other Norwegian summits that I wish to climb (Jiehkkevárri and Store Lenangstind) are both in the far north, but my journey to get there could present opportunities. :)

Cheers,

Tom

It's not just the wheels/tyres. The gearing is different as well. At 95km/h an ANY is at about 2000rpm whereas an AMF will be at about 2500rpm. Maybe that doesn't matter because the speedo reading comes from the output shaft.

The drums will probably be only available from VW/Audi. Lupo 3L drums are identical. If they have stopped supplying, the alternatives are S/H (which might be no better than yours) or steel equivalents:

Mine don't seem to wear at all. You have to use the right shoes though. Zimmermann (10990.152.3) or VW/Audi (6E0 698 525, actually Pagid but you can't buy them anywhere else). Former around £40, latter about £60 but you get all the springs etc. Anything else is too soft.

Dear @timmus ,
From the reputation you have on this Forum... I should not be surprised... but I am... luckily in the positive direction :)

So, If I find you a mountain.. you can fix me a DIS ?;)

What about:
Gaustadtoppen, Rjukan. 1882m aasl with most predictable weather prognoses. (More a hike than a climb, but quite interesting wrt WW2 history)
Norsk Hydro Heavy water plant in Rjukan, famous sabotage action. Have you seen the film "Heros of Telemark" ? it's from Rjukan...
On a winter visit you can ice climb up the falls to the heavy water plant, now a decent museum.
Have you ever been to a city with a mirror that light up the city during the winter?
Volkswagen Group just moved their servers to Rjukan so may a visit there and arrange for a direct line.... ?

Well, I'm not born in Telemark so I must be allowed to speak it up a little (I just live here);)

More serious Tom. Gardermoen airport is 3-4 hours away and I will have no problem to go there to see you. Stavanger 5h, Sandefjord Torp 1h, Krisiansand 2h.

There are appox 40 names on my list of other A2 owners I have seen on the Forum and if 3-4 of us could join forces it could be doable?

Now my brain started to spin... I will have to sit down...

cheers

Brilliant info RAB ?

Pads: I was not aware of the Zimmerman pads and I have then been using to soft pads for 60.000km....
Mine are now at 182.05mm and I am not comfortable to use them any longer in fare of the pad cylinders to pop out...
My VAG dealer says they are off the shelf's (as usual, they are in general not very keen on ordering any else than high volume parts...)

3L auto: The A2 1.2TDI is for me a bit special, first of all from a "green" perspective. The weight reduction program (where the light alu drums are essential) is one key to low consumption and being on of the first Euro 5L approved ones. So I want to keep the alu drums...

ANY vs AMF gear ratio: Thanks for the ANY/FLE diff numbers. I will not borrow the instrument from the ANY.

Cheers

If they are still available, I would be able get the drums from my local VW garage in a few days (from Germany), assuming that they are not on back order. They might be expensive though!

Thanks RAB,
I will take a look at the material composition in the OEM drums. They are casted so not so easy to copy... but I have a 300mm extruded bolt and I am sitting on a lathe so I might make liners for the drums or new ones...
Cheers

You'll have problems make liners, unless they are steel. The drums are made from a composite, not an alloy, a mixture of aluminium and silicon carbide.

Brilliant RAB ?
There you saved me from making two useless drums....
Thanks

Haha! Yes, the shocking truth is that my travel schedule is dictated more by large piles of rock than anything else. ? ?

Gaustadtoppen
World War 1/2 history also interests me, so this mountain, and its surrounding area, would no doubt keep me entertained.

I choose to climb mountains based foremost on their topographic prominence, referred to as 'primary factor' in some English-speaking countries, and also in Norwegian... https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primærfaktor

The attraction of Galdhøpiggen, Snøhetta, Jiehkkevárri, Store Lenangstind, Kebnekaise and Sarektjåkkå is that they have the greatest topographic prominence of the Scandinavian mountains. At the time of writing, I have climbed the only two that are south of the Arctic Circle ...the other 4 are all a long way north. It is my intention, at some point one summer, to travel to the very north of Scandinavia to climb the other 4. It's possible that I'll do this in my A2.

'Climbing' is a very ambiguous word. For some, it means going up a near-vertical cliff using technical aids. For others, it means simply ascending something. Mountaineering is, in many ways, the best term for what I enjoy: reaching summits. Sometimes a good hike is all that's required to achieve this goal, whereas other peaks require more technical skills. It's all valid, and all good fun.

Absolutely. If there is enough demand for my services, I'll happily travel to wherever ...mountains or no mountains! It's always a pleasure to meet with groups of A2 owners, whether in my home country or in other parts of Europe. It's also possible that A2 owners in Sweden may be able to join us, or for me to travel via Sweden. I'm open to all ideas. :)

Kind regards,

Tom
