Fuel Consumption over a year

Hi everyone,

I have had my Tdi 75bph (03 reg) for a year now and covered 16,000 miles. Filled to brim and mileage noted at every fill-up.
Current overall average is 58.40 mpg
Winter months average was about 56-57 and over the summer I was getting 60-62 typically.

Have to say I am very happy with that... it equates to a saving of over £1000 on my previous car! :)

Nice one :)
You could slap some of the aero mods on, get the longer 5th gear mod and quite easily go over 60mpg I reckon!

Peter,

I assume you are doing a lot of motorway driving? That would certainly account for an increase in MPG. I last calculated 52MPG on my 1.4 TDi (75) but this was a combination of (mainly!) economical town and motorway driving. Would you say you drove economically or do you like to floor it occasionally?

Dan b - what's this 5th gear mod you are refering to? How much would it cost to fit?

It's a shame the A2 doesn't have 6 gears. I find 30mph just a tad too slow for 4th and too fast in 3rd for my liking.

Here's a VERY long thread on the 5th gear modification:
http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11914

it basically boils down to changing the 5th gear ratio for a longer ration to reduce rpm. Quite handy if you do a lot of motorway cruising.

An indication of costs:

My mpg average over my first year of ownership was 68mpg. But that was mostly motorways and duel carriageways.

Now the car is mostly driven by my wife on urban roads it's 55-60mpg.

Surprised Rib dog you find 4th too high for 30mph, before I had the 5th gear mod mine would happily trundle at 30 in 5th..... Drop to 3rd if needing quick acceleration. Otherewise Peter its a good result. I drive too quickly to get above 60mpg on a regular basis even with 5th gear mod, aero mods, remap, eco tyres etc.

Hi Peter, yes I get about the same and I'm happy too. With 16,000 pa you must do a far bit of long distance driving, so the 5th gear is worth a serious look.

See my fuel log link in my sig. Had the 5th gear mod last April but other than my Swedish road trip I'm currently doing short town journeys, but further back in time with more cross country trip I was getting consistently over 62mpg+

I would be happy if I were getting those figures.

On my last fill up, i put in exactly 2 gallons / 9.08 litres in, as I just so happened to be by a station when me buzzer went off. From that I only managed 60 miles, which is 30mpg, which is rubbish.

Thats worse than my all time average of 43-44mpg. When I have some money I have to get stealth to look at what is causing it. Never got any more than 45mpg :-(

mines the same. on a motoway at 70 it averages about 51 (dis figs) but average which is mostly town and a roads is 42mpg.

no faults now.
services 2k miles ago.

i get better mpg on a run on my 185bhp 2.0 remapped VW Touran!!

That said i still love my little A2;)

mmmmm.... i wonder what?

no error codes.
new tyres - 195/50/16
serviced not long ago.
stealth remap.
brakes not binding. - just replaced all of it. ie pads, discs, shoes, drums and fluid.

Likewise. I have no errors etc. Its not remapped, but Im thinking of changing that. I drive with a light foot and have been using shell fuel saver diesel.
Usually have ECON on too and have not used rear demister during that stint.
So there has got to be something going on to cause only 30mpg

I think you've both got an over-fuelling issue going on caused either by faulty sensors or a (partially) stuck thermostat. For both of you I would suggest you change the Thermostat and the coolant and fuel temperature senders. All these parts are cheap and are easy DIY jobs.

My car last year suddenly dropped economy to below 50mpg. No error codes etc, the only thing was that it seemed to take rather a long time to reach operating temperature - which I originally put down to the colder time of year. But changing these sensors gave me back my MPG and then some more.

Get that done then at least you've ruled out possible causes!

Any other sensors or things to look at as well???
I will go look them parts up later and order for next weekend.
Im also going to get the undertray off this w/e and inspect for any fuel leaks etc.

Cheers

@ dan

i have!! - i had a dodgy, wiring loom on my injectors, which has now been replaced, whilst that was being done, i had a new temp sensor, it now indicates iit warm now - but it was warming up ok before, as i checked via my obd scanner.

john

think dan was referring to fuel temp sender as well as coolant temp sender

John

Hi john did you order those parts? if so how much was they and did you fit them... I am also looking for a injector cleaner, any one got any they recommend (skipton mentioned diesel plus but I cant find it) - I have been looking at FORTE SPECIALIST INJECTOR CLEANER (http://www.forteuk.co.uk), and Redex Fuel System Cleaner Diesel are their any others people recommend I can buy from off the shelf?

Hi Richard.

I replaced the thermostat and the duel temp sender.
Start was around £14 and the temp sender was £28.
I have also put through some STP diesel fuel system cleaner. You basically empty the tank till light comes on, put the stuff in and then fill to brim.
My car is now running very well indeed.
