Fuel consumption related to speed.

I have just been to the New Forest for Christmas from Romford in the VOLVO, yes, lovely Hotel thanks, loads of food and wine BOOOtiful! Anyway, I filled up on leaving, and filled up on arrival, 16 quid, at speeds of 60, 65 and 70 traffic permitting.

On my return, I filled up on leaving, but had to be back in Romford for my life saving (prolonging?) chemotherapy which was scheduled for early morning. So I went a bit faster, not ridiculously so, but unusually kept up with most of the traffic in the offside lane. It cost 26 quid to fill up!!

Motorways almost door to door, M25, M3, M27. I was really surprised at the difference, because my unfailing speed limiter and monitor('er indoors) keeps me to about 60 ish. This was a mercy mission (it was a day late for treatment due to bank hols, with a don't be late it will be a horrendous day for us, and we will have to stay until your treatment is finished) so the monitor switched off.

It really does show that claims of zillions to the gallon compared with not much to the gallon depend entirely on speed and driving conditions.

I would normally expect 38 to 40 to the gallon on a long trip with the Volvo.

Incidentally, I saw more gritters on the road on the local roads in New Forest, M27 and M3 than I have seen in and around Romford in the last 20 years, no make that 30. But The London Borough of Havering continually boasts of their wonderful road gritting efforts, I can find no witnesses to it.
