Fuel Filler Cap Switch.

Howdy Ay 2

A2OC Donor
Today the fuel filler cap would not open on my A2, for the first time ever, I might add.

I pressed the button in as usual but today the button just stuck in and the fuel flap would not open so I had to open the flap manually.

The door open warning light shows on the dash when the drivers door is open.

I managed to remove the button from the housing. A red light shows inside the switch only when the drivers door is opened which sounds right, I think.

I am thinking it needs a new switch unless someone has a fix for this problem.

Any ideas are welcome please.

Thank You

This happened to me yesterday, 200 miles from home. Eternally grateful to the forum that I could find this post on the station forecourt which pointed me to a manual method for opening the flap which I discovered in the manual. Can anyone tell me what’s involved in replacing the switch, is it a DIY job for a numpty? And the button seems to be stuck fast... is there a way to remove it without horribly mangling it?

When I replaced mine I used a flat head screwdriver, it pulled straight out, you unclip the connector and replace with the new one and push back in.

There is no difficulty whatsoever in doing this, if you can fasten your seatbelt you should be able to do this.

@Malcyb Tip. When you pop the old switch out of the b pillar, tie some string around the wiring loom. that way if it drops down inside the pillar you can retrieve it easy enough. Once new switch fitted untie the string and pop the switch into the b pillar.

Well that was easy wasn’t it... switch arrived today (how fast was that?) and had them swapped over in a couple of minutes, one of which was tying string around the cable ;). Thanks for the help everyone.

I didn’t even bother with the string when I did mine, just didn’t let go of the connector!

Some things really are easy, German engineering at its best!
