:confused:Help I changed the fuel filter on my 51 plate 1.4tdi on Sunday. Done the job before only this time I get a prob, car pig to start drives ok.I go down to the garage about 3 miles (top up with diesel just in case me being a bit on the low side is causing the prob) same garage as always, car is a pig to start. gets it started drives ok up the road no missing, gets home car cuts out wont start at all. Fuel filter off check all is ok re-assemble ,car is a pig to start but drives ok when started. It will give any car a run for its money 100mph no probs performance excellent just a pig to start HELP. It has cut out twice since Sunday

The only explaination I can think of is a small air leak on a hose or fitting which could cause fuel priming problems at start up. If you still have the old filter, try putting it back on as this would eliminate any internal problems with the new one - bad crimps, seals or welds etc. Out of interest, is the new one a genuine Audi part.

Cheers Spike

cheers spike I have the old filter there and I was thinking of doing a quick swap back but a wee bit of grit on the filtered side would create havoc with the pump. I was thinking along the same lines as you with a priming issue/air leak of some sort either at the filter head or the hoses. I am inclined to think that I have a dodgy filter. just thought I would put the issue up for ideas in case I was missing something. I will try a new filter an see what happens. The filter by the way is a fram same as the old one. Cheers Davy:)

Hi Davy
Fram can make very good filters but like all companies who do aftermarket stuff, they make them down to a price and sometimes the quality suffers. Even O.E. suppliers have been known to do this so the fact that a company also makes filters for Audi is no guarantee.
Personally I always buy genuine air, fuel and oil filters even though they cost a few pounds more. The big saving comes in being able to fit them yourself.
End of sermon

fule filter pain

Hi spike I know where you are coming, from the only reason I used the fram was because my car spares place is open on a sunday and I work 6 days and cant get to a dealer so it is more a case of convenience than cost.I have another filter there so I will change it an see what happens. I will keep the forum informed of the results when I change it see ya Davy:)
