Fuel Gauge error.

Hi all,

Just filled up with diesel & the pump clicked off when full. I haven't got as much mileage out of this tank as I normally do & it didn't take as much to fill. When I turned on the ignition the needle shot up but not all the way, like the gauge has become miscalibrated?? It seemed fine yesterday.
Anyone have any experience of similar symptoms?

Mick

The pump will 'cliff off' if the pump is delivering fuel at a fast rate. The guage in the car has nothing to do with pump and the pump has no knowledge of the guage's position.
I'd suggest filling up again, but, if the pump clicks, simply fill some more but only pull the pump's handle lightly.

Thanks for your response and without wanting to sound off, after 24 years of driving I know how to fill up a car. Yesterday the gauge was just above the red section when I left the car. Got in this morning & it only moved a miniscule amount. DIS read 334.9 at time of fill up & I normally get around 390 to 400 out of a tank. (I have a lot of standing traffic on my daily commute) I'll see what happens over the course of this tank of fuel.

Sorry, I appreciate my response was a touch patronising, but your first post essentially seemed to say that you didn't put as much in the tank as you normally do, and the guage in the car confirmed it wasn't yet full!

Cheers,

Tom

Thats ok. I appreciate your help. No, I filled up slowly & the pump clicked off. I usually squeeze a little more in by slowly pulling the pump trigger a couple more times to make sure it is full(I don't vent & brim like some) & the car was definitely full, but the gauge only went up to the next to last line on the gauge. I did have the car up on ramps yesterday to remove the under tray but don't think I disturbed anything that would cause this. It's all a bit wierd. Maybe it will settle over night & it'll be OK in the morning? Just wondered if anyone else had had this happen.
Thanks again.
Mick

Ok, that explains the issue more clearly.
I can't see what you might have disturbed behind the undertray that could affect your fuel guage. DIS seems to be in agreement with your fuel guage; that the tank basically isn't full. You might consider venting the tank on this occasion and seeing if that allows you to get the needle up to max. You might have an epic air bubble trapped in there, or something similar.

Cheers,

Tom

Sounds like an air lock of some sort, did you use your usual petrol station and pump? Could it simply be a forecourt pump fault?

I used one of the two main petrol stations I normally use. I did notice that only a couple of the diesel pumps were available. The others has signs on them stopping them being used.
One thing I did notice with the under shield off was that the thin green plastic turbo tube had popped out of the braided rubber pipe it plugs into. It was a right struggle to get it back in. That wouldn't have introduced air would it?

I'll see how it is in the morning & report back.

Cheers for the help.
