Fuel guage / sender issue

Had an issue with fuel sender etc since owning car . Was told by previous owner that be wary of fuel gauge showing 3/4 on gauge whilst full .. but had to fill up before 1/4,mark ..
I then had someone reset or line up the arrows etc on top of fuel sender , so shows full but stopped sending fuel at half way mark now .
Just something i have put up with .. I have to make sure I don't go close to half gauge mark or ... it just conks out
I'd like it sorted and bear in mind it only takes 14 /15 litres to brim up
So i know there is half a tank sloshing about

Any ideas folks
I did see a thread whereby one owner took sender unit apart and cleaned it up
A bit of crud inside it
And that cured the problem
Be nice to have it working and using the whole tank and the guage corresponding accordingly

Thanks in advance folks

Out of interest - can you give a bit more info :
year / reg of car?
Diesel or petrol engine?
34 or 42 litre tank?
Knowing these may fine-tune the incoming advice as there was a change in the sender from early to late that reverses the way the fuel gauge indicates the tank level. The fine calibration of the needle can be done with a VCDS or similar adaptation in the dashboard settings, but that presumably wouldn't resolve the issue of the empty position unless extreme values are entered - as you have said it may need some mechanical intervention at the sender end itself.

I have one here that works perfectly. It’s the later style 42l tank one. Was in a diesel car. You are welcome to it. Do let me know if you are interested. I could also be persuaded to deliver and help you fit it, that is if it is the right one for your car.
Cheers.

Thankyou Drew
Much appreciated.
I am not sure what size my fuel tank is
But when I do fill up at half way mark it only takes about 15 litres ?
So possibly the smaller tank

On an 02 I would say you have the smaller tank.
Yep
It is 34L on both my 02 and our 52 plate so likely to be the same.

The only question then is whether the polarity of the sender is the same as a later car or not.
I do know that the previous previous owner from Sheffield
He was in this group and messaged me when he see a post and photo of my one
He gave me loads of info about the car and bits he had done etc he used it as a courier van for a year or so and obviously ramped up the miles

And did say he changed the tank or whatever and maybe the issue is how it went back together ( he also told me he ran it on red for a while .. hence the tank off and cleaned internally or whatever he did πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈβ›½οΈ)
That may give some clues as to what he did wrong folks πŸ€”πŸ€”
