Fuel news for all FSI owners?

Easier 97 has no ethanol content apparently

Damn phone! Esso has no ethanol in their super unleaded.

“Esso super unleaded petrol (Synergy Supreme+ Unleaded 97) is ethanol free (except in Devon, Cornwall, the Teesside area and Scotland).”

On the pumps at my local Esso (a huge, modern forecourt) the Super-unleaded (98Ron I think) is clearly labelled E5. I take it to mean this has 5% ethanol already, although only noticed it the other day after hearing about E10 coming here. I had thought 'that's fine, I'll stick with Esso Super' then blow me, next time I was there I noticed the E5 label on the pump.

Next time I visit I'll see what it's actually branded as: it's whatever their premium petrol is at that site anyway. Indeed, I'll check to make sure the whole thing wasn't a dream. I remember Dame Edna served me at the till, so that was perfectly normal ...

E5, 5% alcohol, is fine. It's E10, 10% alcohol, that's not. The pump (nozzle) has had an E5 moniker on it (or should have) for some time now.
Super Unleaded will remain at 5% for the foreseeable future. So, let's chill for now.

Okay, I have tried to research my statement about biodiesel and can't find the final comments. I remember there being a massive brouhaha about it and 'no'. I don't drive a diesel so have not worried. Again, though, this argument was had in 200x on the continent and the result is people using 98, as specified.

This is what the Lupo manual states:

However, by 2010, VW had changed their minds on RME:

Reliable sources of 100% biodiesel ceased to exist when the requirement for the addition of biodiesel to diesel came into force. This was in 2008, when my local supply of biodiesel disappeared. It had been supplied by Shell or BP. Any reliable source of biofuel would have been purchased by oil majors to meet their diesel requirement, leaving only the more unreliable sources (not sufficiently washed and not sufficiently dried). Maybe that's what caused VW to change their minds?

After very helpful advices from members here and having sorted the coolant problem, and learning that FSI engines need long distant runs I took my car for a motorway drive few days ago, WOW what a difference, I could feel the difference when I got home, she is now very quiet at rest, I then read that higher grade unleaded makes a difference so filled her up with Tesco Momentom and again WOW. I think she is very happy now. No going back!

Hello
I am in France at the moment and I have seen in some petrol stations E15.
I was also wondering if my FSI could run on E85 which is between 65% and 85% BioEthanol (depending on the season).
I then went on several websites that recommend installing a separate box to run on E85. This kit is modifying the parameters of injection as you need more E85 than SP98 to get the same energy release. The kit is around 400€. The E85 (SP105 ??) is around 0.80-1.00€ as opposed to 1.40-1.50€ for SP98.
I will keep digging the info and keep you updated.

Don't know how I fell onto this thread, but being served by Dame Edna just made me cough my coffee out...I was once served by the pink panther, but I was much younger and think that asking for a packet of 'skins' was the giveaway as to what I'd been up to...I now only ask for Rizzlas!!!

Did anyone ever figure out if the E10 issue is indeed related to the fuel pump seal material?

I don't fundamentally see how adding ethanol to the fuel would affect the engines ability to run in the "ultra-lean" mode as long as the octane rating is high enough.

In theory the FSI should still run in the stratified mode with E10 if the fuel was 97+ octane I would have thought (not sure if this exists).

So presumably the reason for VAG specifically advising against E10 is material incompatibility?

Most probably. Quite possibly the penny-pinching use of NBR instead of Viton. Here's an article about what would have been E25 (Cleveland Discol):

E10 not suitable for classic/vintage even some modern cars?
