Fuel Tank Strap

Advice required. Just looked under my silver 1.4 petrol & noticed the fuel tank strap rusted in half & hanging down. Are the other mounting points strong enough to hold the tank in place until the better weather arrives, or should I fit a replacement strap asap🤔

Sorry that’s Audi Tradition, the factory suppliers of old/obsolete parts.
Sadly they will not supply to the UK, but due to the extreme kindness of @Rickmeister (who lives in Germany) who kindly does occasional bulk orders with them. These are then send to the UK, for onward distribution. Perhaps the only sensible way to get that elusive bit of trim or widget.
Do you know if you need a large or small tank strap?

Not sure what size but the low symbol came on the other day & a few miles later I filled up with 30L. Can the other mounting points hold the tank sufficiently?

My project car lacked the strap for a good couple of months back at the beginning of this year until I was able to get the new one via Rickmeister / Audi tradition and get it fitted. It's not ideal but it shouldn't fall off (this period included a drive the length of the UK : it disintegrated without warning at some point on the journey south and survived the journey back north and some subsequent commuting before the new one arrived).

Sounds like your car requires the 34L version but you would need to confirm this as the 42L version is much squarer and wouldn't be supporting the 34 litre tank.

That’s reassuring, it looks easy enough to get a strip of aluminium & bend to shape. Thanks for the information 👍

I made a new one from a not required Coach fuel tank strap

as an indication for the OP, I've doodled what my 42L strap looks like over your diagram thus (I can't remember what the extreme end of it looks like but it's definitely got a squarer profile as I've drawn in red.

Don't want to leap on anyone's bandwagon, but our 2003 14.TDI SE has the fuel tank strap as an advisory on the MOT (last Friday).

Mechanic can't find one anywhere - and guidance would be really helpful

As previously stated by @simufly the tank straps are available from AT. They still do not send directly to the UK and @Rickmeister acts as the Germany point of sale and freights them to a "distributor" in the UK and the shipping costs are divided between the recipients.

Cheers, will AT ship in the EU though? I have an address in France and a Euro account.

I managed to get one from a kind member here that had a spare one unfortunately the bolts holding the strap on were rusted away so couldnt remove without spending considerable time which I didn’t have. It’s a job I will do when the weather is kinder. I’ve made a temporary repair by drilling a hole either side of the split band & pulled together with a large cable tie. A band could be made easily by using a strip of aluminium & bending to shape & bolting back in place. That’s if you can get the bolts out.
I could trace around my new strap onto a piece of paper & send post it so it would make it easy to copy out of aluminium, if it helps?

Once you have gone to a load of trouble, and expense, to get one of these straps I recommend hanging it up and giving it two coats of paint. I used satin black Smoothrite.
Then spray the top side with a cavity wax, I used Bilt Hamber Dynax UC. Once fitted everything got a squirt of Dynax, road grit will remove it over time but better than nothing over paint.
Edit, reading others comments and problems, new bolts were dipped in Dynax before being fitted. Yes that will increase the torqued tension but I don’t use a torque wrench for this type of work.

A 2003 car will have the 42lt tank. Might be the same part number with a later final letter indicating a later revision?
