Gear box / clutch

I’ve got a problem with my car, possibly concerning my gear box and/or clutch.

When my A2 (1.4 petrol, 133.000km) has been standing for a while (i.e. overnight, cold motor), I’m having troubles driving away since a few days.

Shifting itself into the 1st or Reverse is no problem, but after releasing the clutch pedal, there is no traction at all. After releasing the clutch pedal further, I hear a short (very) loud sound (not good) and feel a small shock. Suddenly traction is back. I’m able to drive away then, without any problems or what so ever.

When parking for a few hours only, the gear box and clutch are working properly.

Nevertheless, I have the impression this ‘start problem’ is (potentially) damaging. My fear is that the problem won’t disappear but will get worse.

Does someone have an idea what’s going on in my car?

Hi Ruben, welcome to the A2oc
From your description I'd guess it is related to the clutch plate not moving freely on splines of the gearbox mainshaft. Clearances increase when everything is warm so this could be the reason why its worse when starting from cold. The clutch pressure plate contains a very powerful diaphragm spring so this eventually overcomes the stickion on the splines and suddenly engages the clutch.
This is the first time I have heard of this problem on an A2 so plese let us know how you get on

Cheers Spike
