Hi everyone, today I noticed changing into 5th was a little tricky.when I inspected the gearbox later there was beige oily deposits all over the top of the gearbox.this obviously is not good.Any ideas what it could be?
Cheers
Martin

This sounds like water has got into the gearbox, caused by the collecting cup (which catches water that comes through the vents in the bonnet) being knocked out of place.
If that is the case, you need to reposition the cup above the gearbox, and you'll want to get the gearbox oil changed.

I've found one of those cheap inspection cameras good for positioning the cup properly - feed it through the grill and shut the bonnet..then empty a little water down to see where its going.

Once I know exactly where the collector should sit I mark the edge of the bracket with some tipex or some other suitable marker to make sure I keep it aligned.

Hi Steve, thanks for the advice.I checked the movement of the selector tower and it felt "gritty". Hopefully with new oil it should be ok.Do you know the location of the filler and drain points?.My engine is an ATL and I believe the box is a GRJ
Many thanks

Martin, the short answer is I don't. This thread (despite being about a petrol model) might point you in the right direction: https://www.a2oc.net/community/index.php?threads/gear-box-filler-plug.30086/

It's important to remove the filler plug before you remove the drain plug, to be sure that the filler plug isn't hopelessly corroded in place. Otherwise you risk draining the box with no obvious means of refilling it.
