Gearbox differential

This is an update to my previous post regarding the clunking noise I experience whenever the accelerator is pressed.
I was told today that the problem could be with the gearbox differential which is expensive to repair or replace. I only have 120k on the clock and it runs lovely otherwise.

Has anyone had the same problem and managed to get it fixed??.
Thanks in advance

Can you please link back to your previous thread on this?
Thanks

This one?

Yes, that's the one. I'm not able to see the OP's profile (and presumably others are in the same boat) and was reluctant to start trawling through old threads looking for something that would normally be really straightforward to find.

Yes, I found the same, but if you click on the number of messages instead of the posters name in the pop-up box, this give the same result and shows their posts. Maybe a forum bug?

Yes this is it.
I have also had the engine mounts checked for condition and they are not an issue.

This is unusual, although not unknown of course Perhaps you could give us some details on the sort of garage that are giving you this advice? Hopefully they are a well-established independent VAG specialist, whose advice can be relied on.

Have you checked the dog bone mount? It is much more likely to be the cause of this, as when you accelerate this mount takes a fair bit of torque? can do this yourself with a jack and some axle stands for safety as it is only 4 bolts from memory and usually the rubber bit is perished.

Does it do any clunking if you disengage the clutch and rev it up and down, might have just enough twist to get the mount to make a sound ruling out the diff? Could also try giving engine a good tug back and forth to see if it anything clunks.

Thanks for your reply.

I initially took my A2 to Montgomery motors our in Shoreham by sea. They had catered for all the vehicles needs for over 5 years, but drew a blank trying to diagnose the source of the clunking. It then went to Hi8 in Burgess hill, mid Sussex. They suggested the driveshaft. And most recently I took it to my local Halfords autocenre Purely for convenience, being open on Saturdays. They (only suggested) that it is the gearbox dif as they could not find movement or deterioration in any other areas i.e. droplinks, mounts. They noticed a clunk coming from the gearbox when they rocked both front wheels simultaneously.

It seems like it may be one of a host of things.
Thank you
