Gearbox linkage cables

Search function (top right of the screen) is your friend here. This very topic has come up quite a lot recently as they start to fail:

Thanks very much for your reply so quickly. My garage is awaiting an end part expected to arrive today to solve problem, I have no technical know how here. Are they available in Germany ?

Sadly, I believe they are not available now anywhere new. A good breaker is the best bet, or keep an eye on the above thread to see if a third party solution comes to fruition.

Thanks again, I do know where a scrapped one is same year as my TDI 2005 - do you know if its a case of "Will fit" if right model / year - had some variation in gearboxes initially sought after. When garage came to put reconditioned box in they discovered cable problem, so now eagerly looking for them if an end part arriving soon does not do the job !

@MARTYN Can you explain what your problem is?

The end pieces that clip onto and connect between the gear cables to the selector linkages are readily available.
for instance :

It is the cable sets themselves that are very hard to come by and currently unavailable as new parts even from Audi Tradition. WOM @chumsofmanutd I believe are investigating a new-build solution for the cables but obviously these things take time to do properly.

Thank you Robin - am awaiting news from garage re "end part" of cables. Had a bit of a nightmare with replacement gearboxes and now have thoroughly reconditioned box done by specialist of 46 years. Car in bits, when they came to put in the box found problem with cables. A2 owner for 21 years, should have joined long ago, really appreciate help so far and dont want to end up scrapping car, be a bit of a disaster.

I cant describe properly the problem but an end part has been ordered, from Enniskillen source I think. Will arrive soon and hope fits - see you what you have said about readily available end pieces. If it does not fit then I could put garage in touch with yourself, if the links you have generously supplied dont enable a solution ?
Looking @ circulating breakers, I do know where a scrapped 2005 TDI one is - presume would be same set of cables as my same year model ! Might be problem getting them out without damage ?

Thanks again, Martin

So it is not the cables that are the problem just the end fittings? What gearbox has been fitted? Perhaps the problem is the selector tower end rather than the cable end fittings?

I think that is correct but am not sure of detail, am not mechanic but that is what I understood it to be.
Will ask about Selector tower end rather than cable end fittings - if it is that are they available - maybe this part coming is it, apologies for lack of technical detail and much thanks for help👍

Hoping part arrives soon, but trying to have contingency plan in case it does not do the job.
The gearbox has GPK code.

GPK is what i had in my 2004 BHC A2 until it was replaced with a 6-speed, so providing it is in good shape it is at least the right type of gearbox for the car.

I have had the gearbox completely overhauled by Darren guy who has been doing it for 46 years ! Colebrook Transmissions, Ivybridge.

Have spoken to garage - part has arrived and fits. Just reservation about the cables themselves I surmise - if they are faulty then looks like finding them through breaker. I cam across scrapped car when looking for gearbox, might be a possibility but will wait til definitely a problem.

Many thanks for help, should have joined long ago since 2002 owner, everyone so helpful and knowledgeable.

I have a complete set of cables including gear lever and housing if it helps, I think they came off a 1.4 petrol but I think they're all the same.

Thanks so much for this, hopefully Monday should see the present cables functioning ok...if not will be in touch quickly !

I have no idea about if petrol one will fit TDI, but it would seem likely !

Where are you ? Im near Plymouth.

If they are faulty & cables fit you may have saved car 😊 difficult to find them in good condition from scrapyard....see what Monday brings👍

Hello from another Devonian member!

I was looking at 7zap earlier and it seemed to me that all A2 gearbox cables are indeed the same

I don't want to pee on anyone's bonfire, but the 7zap diagram (link below) has distinct part numbers for the petrol (both 1.4 and 1.6 I think from the PR- codes) and the diesel ones - which may suggest a difference. Having said that, there may be info here within A2oc that says you can use A2 petrol cables on an A2 diesel gearbox - but I have never seen this thus far.

Robin is correct there are three different part numbers for the cable sets so that implies not interchangeable. The diesel cables have a heatshield section that is not on the petrols.

Thanks again Robin - diesel ones to source if present found faulty..

Thank you again, diesel ones sought if present ones faulty, will know when box put in Monday..
