Gearbox linkage cables

Thanks so much for this, hopefully Monday should see the present cables functioning ok...if not will be in touch quickly !

I have no idea about if petrol one will fit TDI, but it would seem likely !

Where are you ? Im near Plymouth.

If they are faulty & cables fit you may have saved car ๐Ÿ˜Š difficult to find them in good condition from scrapyard....see what Monday brings๐Ÿ‘
No bother bud, I'm based in Northern Ireland.

Oh ok I obviously still need to brush up on my 7zap code reading - thanks guys for correcting my misinformation

Thank you again, diesel ones sought if present ones faulty, will know when box put in Monday..
Will find out if cables are stretched this afternoon when box put in - can anyone tell me the Part number for the TDI 2005 cables ? I have found breaker who has had an A2 TDI & has sets of cables but not labelled ! So he needs part number to search through them - many thanks to all who have offered help and advice ๐Ÿ‘ Martin

Eventually found set of cables - this is what the old ones looked like after breakage !

Cables found at breakers eventually - cost me ยฃ192 to take out but better than no car any more ! Thanks all who helped - here is pic of cables broken - when box went should have attempted a gear ! See wires pulled, but not to know......

No, this club advised against petrol ones, pointing out different part numbers for each - I dont know much but think think it to do with "heat shielding" needed for TDI....present set working fine.
the exhaust on the Tdi comes out of the rear of the engine and goes downwards presumably very close to where the cables go through the bulkhead. Those on the 1.4i (I assume 1.6 similar but I don't know) comes out of the front and passes underneath the subframe so perhaps the cables aren't quite as close to these on the petrol models.

Nah thereโ€™s plenty of room for them in both cases. I suppose itโ€™s a case of someone biting the bullet and giving it a go.

There are three part numbers for these cable set

8Z077874S which is for all 1.4 tdi engined cars

8Z0711874J for petrol 1.4 and 1.6 up to vin 8Z-2-052-000

8Z0711874N for petrol 1.4 and 1.6 from vin 8Z-2-052-001

Perhaps our breakers could remove one of each type then compare to see the differences. The diesel cables does have heat shielding around the exposed cables in the engine bay. Would love to know the dimensional differences between the part numbers.

Worth noting (something I've not noticed before nor paid attention to previously) that apart from the differences in cable sets, there are also different part numbers for the bracket that secures the cables to the gearbox on early and late petrol 1.4/1.6 model codes (T1Q, T94) as well as AMF/BHC vs ATL, as well as the parts connecting the cables to the selector mechanism - this may also be necessary to look at when it comes to establishing compatibility of cables between boxes (and could obviously be related simply to anchoring cables onto the respective MQ200 / MQ250 gearbox casing). The levers converting gear-lever movement into cable actions at the cabin end are identical whether Tdi or petrol, 1.4 or 1.6.

Parts 42, 47 and 49 on the 7zap diagram :
