Glovebox Lights - permanently on???

Having recently acquired our first A2, I am very surprised to discover that the light in the glovebox seems to be permanently switched on whenever the ignition is on.

I discovered this during an evening drive recently when I saw a ray of light escaping from the glovebox in fornt of the passenger seat. On closer examination of the glovebox, I cannot see any switch or plunger for a switch.

Is this really the case or is there a hidden switch somewhere or has the original switch broken off?

Having recently repaired my glovebox light switch which had failed in the permanently off position hopefully I can help. It could quite easily have failed in the on position although i thought the glovebox light on my car only comes on with the sidelights + the door open. The contacts are opened when lid shut by a small plastic arm, which basically breaks off.

This is also well documented on here if you search for it. Basically the switch cannot be "got at" without removal of the glovebox, which in itself is not actually that bad of a job 4 or 5 screws from memory, one of which is behind the a-pillar trim which will require removal.

Then the whole box drops down and you can see the offending item. Then its a case of gluing the arm back on in position, a little bit fiddly to be honesty getting the angle right. It would seem that some bright spark designed the little plastic arm such that it can see the loading of the door, so its no suprise that it breaks.

Hope this helps.

the lamp should only be on when the lights are on.

one screw is hidden behind the coin collector, the lower a-pillar trim will need to come out. But this is RHD so I can't tell you exactly.
