Goodbye Rover.

My thoughts go to the staff involved. What a weekend they face.

Yip I feel for them... For a company turning out decade old 10 times facelifted cars with panel gaps to fit parcels though (let alone a thick letter)... well... they did not do too bad. But that Cityrover piece of rubbish that cost more than a decent Car of the Year Fiat Panda and had less kit and woefull quality sealed it for me I think. They thought they would have sold about 25000 of these by now... guess how many were sold? Less than 5000!!! So sorry to Rover. But they have been taking people for a ride for too long now. And the general public are no fools. Few bits of wood and cow in a 15 year old car does not hide the bad bits... and very good new cars like the Panda just show it up even more so.

And why did deal after deal fail for Rover? Because things were worse than people had thought I suspect or Rover ever let on. Thankfully Land Rover was sold long ago and the same with MINI. But if Rover had made the MINI then they would have had a competive series of MG Rover cars by now... They were just very unlucky.

Very sad news indeed. I work for a supplier to Rover and other OEMs and it's going to hit many companies hard. Hopefully now they are in administration SAIC will buy some parts of the company.

Rover engineers put so much work into the new Mini it was a shame they couldn't keep it......but now BMW pinched it and have the cheek to make people think it's a BMW designed car!

2004 1.4 TDi (90) SE, Cobalt Blue, Climate control, Cruise control, DIS, Sport seats, Winter pack, Symphony II.

Very sad but inevitable. I read that Rover made 16.3 cars per employee per year, against Nissans 300.
I have owned many cars from the Rover group or it's ancestors, the Metro had to be the worst, with the tailgate closed it was possible to lay inside and shake hands with someone outside. I know it seems impossible, this was a new car, main dealer supplied, he didn't believe what we said so we proved it. I also had a "talking" Maestro, all we ever heard constantly was "gatery needs charging" Poor quality eventually killed the company, and that's before we mention the All Aggro, and Princess etc.etc.
Why did we buy them? National pride that's why, thankfully we have all grown up and realised that jap crap wasnt so after all. When Jap cars provided almost everything as standard, BMC were still listing even the heater as an extra. At least any idiot could take a Brit car apart and put them back together. I was one of those idiots!
Sad indeed for the workforce who no doubt would have liked to produce quality, they suffer, not poor management.
Oh well, it'll have to be a TVR, an acquaintance of mine owned a new one, but that's another (sad)story.
I am sure that in years to come we will hear what relly went wrong.

Sad for the workers involved but about time the albatross was removed from the neck of the UK tax paying public.

Just how much has this lame duck cost us over the years? (Short answers, no sentences required)

BL (as was, NOT BMC/Austin, Morris, Triumpth Rover group) has never built a decent car, with the possible exception of the MGF. (Discuss - spend no more than 10 minutes on this question)

Answer 1...shedloads
Answer 2...Dunno,can't remember which was BL and not BMC..... etc. My MG Montego was pretty good and provided you fitted a brace to the top of the front suspension it steered ,....well......it steered!

A good effort. (or as sucessive governments have said of MG Rover - excellent results, go to the top of the class - and sharpen the rubbers [37])

NEVER attempt a battle of wits with an unarmed man.
A2 1.4 SE TDI replaced with A3 2.0TDI DSG, the transmission of the future - today.

Today I saw in the papers that PriceWaterhouseCoopers are trying to figure out what SAIC indeed bought last year for the initial £67mil they paid. The thinking is they already bought the intellectual rights to the 25 and 75 as well as that to the K-series engine!!! So without buying anything more (or taking on MG's debt) they can in fact start to build their own versions of these cars already. What a great deal that was!!! Sell the most important bits first and then HOPE they take your debt too!

The Director's track record for making good deals certainly does look poor. Giving the design work for the 45 replacement to TWR was a masssive error. That new car should have been out for 18 months now and the extra cash flow may have prolonged Rover's life long enough for them to make the deal with SAIC work. I suspect now that Rover have gone into receivership SAIC will buy up the production lines for the 45 and 75 and transport them back to China. The only hope as far as I can see for UK MG Rover manufacturing is for the MG brand, namely the TF.

Have you been inside a TF lately Will? The dash is awful and looks as if it came straight out of a 1982 Montego Van - albeit with the heater controls now painted a nice naff silver... and the same massive panel gaps in the dash trims as on the ourside. At least the 25 had a nice new dash after the facelift. When in a friend's TF roof up I could also see outside world through the bottom of the roof where it stood about 15mm proud of the body!!! And no it was not an old MGF... it is a 6 month old TF. So even for this car I don't really see a life. Not with the new MX-5 already out and resale value of MR Rover cars being next to none after this deal's collapse. Cabrio's are fickle fashion things so I don't think the popularity of the TF will last much longer...

I must admit I have never been inside a TF, my pride would never let me ;) But I do see lots of them about and if enough people like them, with all it's faults, then there's money to be made. But those dials are still shocking!

Did you guys see where the "only car that will possibly still be made" is on the JD Power survey?

Second last!!! Hmmm...

[and the pic of the dials above was from the MGRover website which is now dead I presume! hence the red cross!]
