Handbrake problem after swapping brake shoes

Had this a couple of times. The ABS gets confused due to the lack of signal from the brake switch. The replacement brake switch should function as normally i.e. pedal pressed all 3 brake lights on, pedal released all 3 brake lights off. The issue is the ABS pump performs 2 tasks and currently can not tell which mode it should be in. It either works in braking mode when the pedal is pressed, but if the pedal isn't pressed it swaps to traction control or ASR mode. The car needs to move so the ABS sensors and the brake light switch can reset it. Worked for me every time. Unless you are "lucky" and there is a different fault. Have you set up the switch ( most now auto adjust ) but if it came with installation instructions did you follow them.

It could be this as I've never moved the car just plugged it in and tried the brake to see if the lights worked or not. There wasn't any instructions with it (Intermotor brand) that was the only new one I could find online, genuine one were all used items. I just jammed the brake pedal and relocated back into the holder.

Well I got it all back together this morning took it for a run and sure enough the brake lights are working and the flashing glow plug light reset itself. Thanks Audifan, yet again you've saved the day. I just never considered that the car would need to be driven to get the brake lights to work. Everyday's a school day. ;)

Really happy to help. Does not happen every time. Possible depends on how long the switch was faulty for the ABS to get confused. Don't despair and doubt your work. Go and have a cup of tea / coffee and then take the car for a short run. Only after that if the coil still flashes or brake lights not working worry about a faulty replacement switch or other wiring problems.

I took it for a half decent run and everything seemed fine so fingers crossed it stays that way. I've just dechromed the grill and Audi rings front and rear then fitted Audi number plate surrounds to my new Dolphin Grey Tdi (Project Flipper). I'll start a new thread with pictures once I get a chance.

Yes should now all be fine until you need a new brake switch. How long had she been driving it with the flashing coil light? I think it has something to do with the ignition being turned on a number of times to cause this issue.

It wasn't long, she drove it home about 4/5miles then it was parked up till we put the new switch in but did have the ignition on and off a few times trying to get it to work before the new switch arrived then few times more when it wouldn't work so that probably explains it

I must have changed 8 or 9 brake switches and 3 of them needed the drive to reset other were OK.
If you have any other questions then just ask and if I can I will gladly help you.

Thanks, I will do. Luckily for me you seem to know your stuff unlike me, I'm usually fine until it doesn't go to plan ? ??
