Handbrake

Went to take the A2 for a drive, and on reversing a clunk noise came from rear brakes as if there had stuck on also, handbrake has a little play in it to. Has happened a couple of times before, but not as loud or as much play.

Has anyone ever had any problems with sticking rear brakes.

Alan

Release handbrake and drive forward 10 Inches. Than reverse.

Let's say your Problem is nothing special;)

Cheers Erstens, going by what you said, you have or are suffering from the same problem.

Following a period of inactivity, all brakes will stick - mine did it this morning, after Tank had a day off yesterday.

It's nothing particularly to worry about and unless you start to hear strange noises, then pay it no attention. DON'T do what I heard someone else say, a long time ago: spray a light film of WD40 to stop the sticking! DON'T DO THIS..

Cheers,

Mike

If conditions allow it helps to leave the handbrake off and park in gear. This helps prevent the brake linings sticking to the drums with the film of rust which forms almost immediately in damp weather.

Hi Alan
Its doubtful the sticking brakes are related to the handbrake lever free play - its more likely the cable needs adjusting (I've had to do this once on my 2001 TDi)

No, but in the german forum, we heard about the problem. It sticks and the cause is rust (thin layer of rust caused by Humid air).

I would allways suggest to use the handbrake EVERY day. So the bowden cable will also not stick.

Yes but this is bad for the bowden cable, if never been used... ^^

A bit of common sense is required here. Personally I only park in gear and leave the handbrake off when parking for long periods - usually at home. During normal daily driving the handbrake gets plenty of use so sticking cables are not a problem.

Hand brake

I had a problem with the handbrake not releasing fully
The lever did not drop down fully and a warning light was left on
The solution was that the hand hold with the button has detached its self and moved up the shaft and the ratchet would not fully release
The cure was to push the hand hold back onto the shaft
A garage suggested superglueing in position! But I have not bothered as it is easy to push it back

If the handbrake grip has worked loose, it sounds like the metal clip that holds it has either broken or bent out of place.

Whatever you do, don't glue it in place. They can be mended (if bent) or replaced by a new one at reasonable cost.

Cheers,

Mike
