Has anybody replaced a gaiter on the steering rack?

Hi All,

I need to replace a leaking steering gaiter A2 TDI. Has anybody manged to do this successfully without the use of a garage lift? All I have access to is my driveway and a set of axle stands. I've had a quick look but it looks a right b****r to get to. Perhaps there is already a walk-through on here but I could not find anything by searching. I'm hoping that someone could point me in the right direction of give me some advice. If it makes any difference, it's the off-side one that needs replacing (passenger side).

Many thanks in advance.

That will be the near side if it’s the passenger side then, should just be loosen the gaiter clips , slacken locknuts & unwind the tie rod , counting the number of turns to remove/unscrew the tie rod Giving access for gaiter removal.
Just a rough plan!
Keith.

Just bumping this as the steering rack gaitor urgently needs replacing on Akoya on the passenger side - how is it done? There seems to be no access to the end of the steering rack?

Hi dj_elk,
Is it a split gaiter you are repairing or have you got fluid leaking out?
I seem to remember that the anti roll bar may need to be loosened off , I think somebody on here has access to the manual , I’ve only got the German owners manual I can have a look, this weekend if you like.
Cheers
Keith.
Have you got the special tool to undo the tie rod?

I had to replace the rack ends last summer and I found it a lot easier to remove the subframe and then put it back.

I decided to proceed this way because I spent nearly an hour trying to loosen the gaiter clips. It took about an hour to remove the subframe with the most difficult job being the removal of the pressure line fittings from the steering rack.

Steering gaiters are dust covers so they shouldnt leak steering fluid but need to be intact to stop dirt ingress into the ram and seals

That tool is fab once it grips it will not let go and only a few quid
