Have I bought a wrong un?

Having decided to rejoin the A2 family, I looked around for a low mileage one with a decent history.
Found one on eBay but it was in London and I'm in Northumberland, but a chat with the owner and some mot history checks, and I bought it and had it shipped up.
I know a bit risky, but I allowed for some work on the car if needed in my budget. Belt, water pump etc
Car arrived with a flat battery, and with a EML on. The MOT history had mentioned this a couple of times in the past, but not in the last couple of years. I put it down to a potential lack of use, the car had only done 57,000 miles and was averaging 3,000 miles a year in recent times.
Charged the battery, which has been fine since, took the car for a descent run and the light went off. Hoorah
So a few things needed to be done, biting point of clutch high, belt and water pump, but apart from that it's been pressed into service and has proved as much fun as I remembered.
One thing was the engine,1.4 petrol was a bit noisy, almost diesel like, so that's was added to the list. It also felt a bit sluggish, but as we were coming from a modern TT, anything was going to feel a bit pedestrian. And I thought a throttle body clean would probably help.
Well tonight the wife got the EML on again when coming home, but it was flashing this time, and experienced a loss of power. Light went solid after a mile or so, power came back but light stayed on, but no longer flashing.
Any thoughts, I haven't got the ability to do a scan.

Bought a cheap scanner, plugged it in, and it won't connect!
First time I've used one, so may be doing something wrong.Reader lights up when plugged in, but when I do a scan it doesn't work.
Or have I bought the wrong thing?

The car is running petrol from Shell.

Cheap scanners often fail to connect, or connect but fail to talk nicely.

My old 1.4MPi (same as yours) ended up with a trader friend. He's got a pretty fancy full-trader's general reader (so much, much more than a generic OBDII reader), and that fails on most counts. My VCDS? Perfectly fine.

He's got the same: stubborn lights although it continues to run fine.

Cheers Barry,
So no point trying the cheap scanner again? It will never communicate? Or it might on the 10th attempt?
Anyone recommend a reasonably priced scanner that will work that I can get quickly
Stuart

OBD eleven works certainly for codes and descriptions but VCDS lite is always better if you can get a suitable laptop and cable.

Hi,

If you get stuck just PM me as my mate is an audi tech not far from you.

He does everything on mine for cash and I'm in ponteland.

Cheers Jon

Thanks for the offer Jon.
Borrowed a friends Carly and did a scan
P0303 cylinder 3 misfire
P0202 injector cylinder2(N31), circuit malfunction
P0201 injector cylinder1(N30), circuit malfunction

P1564 throttle actuator (J338), under voltage during basic setting

and P0206 defrost flap positioning motor (V107)

So sounds a bit daunting, but at least it explains why it’s a bit sluggish:rolleyes:

Thoughts on what it all means? As stated before the car has done low miles and hasn’t been used much before I bought it. It’s also been sat for a week.
I am happy to poke around and try things, but ’modern’ cars are a bit out of my comfort zone so please explain as if talking to a 6 year old.
Thanks Stuart

I’ve just reposted the above in the diagnostic forum, as I think that’s a better place for this now.
Sorry my first post since coming back into A2 ownership was a bit negative.
We are loving being back in an A2, and I always thought we would be spending some cash, even on such a low mileage one.
Driving the lovely B roads around us has me grinning inanely, something the modern TT never managed!
Stuart.

The Mk1 TT is the way to go, the old one's are the best, A2s & TTs!
Mac.
