Is it possible to remove just the turn part of the headlight cluster and how?

I'm hoping to replace with a spare mk4 golf turn if possible? anyone tried that before?

Thanks

Maybe try the auto headlight switch replacement thread - have a look here and related links where another VAG rotary headlight switch substitute was put into the A2 mounting to do much the same but without having to feed the sensor through as well.

dodders, not sure exactly what you are trying to do. Your switch is worn but the " turn part of the headlight cluster" has me scratching my head. If you want to replace just the swich assembly as shown in your picture then either get a good used one from one of our breakers or one from another car that has the big connector block on the back, possibly A3 or golf mk3. If you want a nice upgraded switch then if you get an auto headlight switch with sensor again with the big block connector on the rear you will then have 2 choices, either fit the switch into the existing fascia or cut the fascia to take the front panel of the new switch. Various threads on here to do it, including a nice chrome trim ring I put on my switch.

Hi,

It just depends on what you mean by the turn part.

It looks like you have not yet released the wiring loom connector from the switch, do so and remove the switch from the dash. If this is what you want then mission accomplished.

If not, ........ The switch essentially consists of two halves, the front is the main mechanical gubbins and the rear the electric gubbins. These can be separated, you will see the feint join and is a matter of releasing 4 tabs to separate. The front part is now separate and if this is what you need mission accomplished after mating new front to existing rear assuming compatible.

If not, then this the furthest I have needed to go and it is not obvious how the turn part you actually grip between index figure and thumb comes out. If you need this done then it would help if you posted several close up pics of your new turn part in an attempt to give me some inspiration how to proceed.

Thanks for all of your replies,Didn't use the correct terminology for the part which has caused confusion from me.
Basically I want to replace the soft touch switch that's worn.
I'll try all of your suggestions and see if I can get the switch out.
Thanks again, all.

One of the issues that you may encounter with the replacement Golf 4 parts and similar with auto- sensors etc. is that there is a subtle difference with the A2 part - in our case, the plastic housing piece has the indicator logos indicating which setting you are currently in, and the knob and associated parts behind the facia pushes out of the middle as you have above. The replacement parts all seem to have the indicator ring around the knob integrated including the light-up LED-containing part and a facia ring that clicks onto this, which means that to get them fitted into the A2 housing you need to cut a 63mm (from memory) hole in the original (and then if required, add the stainless or chromed steel trim ring to tidy it up) - there is also a difference in the way it clicks home that means to begin with it sits 5mm too deep into the dash when secured. I've not got round to doing this yet on mine so currently I have a functional but not very pretty knob (with auto lights!) sitting 5mm too deep in the middle of the worn original outer.

Fit the ring from the front of the fascia and the switch from the rear making sure you keep the switch aligned i.e auto top vertical.

I think it may be wise for me just to buy a replacement, plug and play and save's the faf!.
I think you may be right, I am still not clear exactly what you wanted to do. As I said a picture of the replacement would be good.

Thought it would be easier to swap the whole unit,so found one on ebay not perfect but fine for what I'm wanting and cheap!
