Headlining revamp

View attachment 76516

This is how far you need to strip the interior to get at the headliner. Wouldn't care to think how many clips will break now that the plastics have aged.

Good God, oh my... Yep, that's not something I'd manage with my skills. Born with two left hands, you see ?

But it would allow me to investigate that leak I have on the rear passenger side. Currently fixed with good old duct tape.

This is why we keep a stock of the clips as you always break one or two.

Is the leak from the OSS?

Ian

Agreed, and with OSS the headlining is more delicate. If this is successful will then do my FSI, which has OSS! Maybe a good time for an OSS service.

Not sure. It seems to originate close to the C-pillar. The lining is already seriously discoloured, as is the biscuit underneath. I cleaned the seals all around, but as soon as I poured water over it again, it came through. Hence the duct tape which seems to be a good temporary solution, as the problem has stopped. Thankfully my A2 is black so the tape doesn't really stand out. And since my OSS is faulty anyways (only retracts on one side), I'm not missing out on much.

Bob,

I’ve just updated my comments in Post 10 and Post 16. I e added some links to different options for black buttons and also VW Beetle sun glasses holders in Platinum and Beige, possibly Twist but cannot confirm.

Have a sit down for an hour or 2 and watch as many YouTube guides on how to reupholster the headlining. There are plenty on there. Some good and some bad. The bad ones are just as useful to watch so you know exactly what not to do.

Kind regards,

Tom

Many thanks for the advice Tom, much appreciated. Will indeed look at on line videos.

I'll be getting in touch with Kleynie to tackle our OSS & headlining when the weather improves. I am fine with spanners but a man's got to know his limitations.

Has anyone found a supplier who has a good match to original Grey headlining/rooflining material.I am going to attempt to replace the headlining in the Purple Fsi with OSS. I managed a reasonably good replacement in my Audi 100 estate with sunroof. And I have 2 headliner cards. So I can practice on the first one

Best to have a word with @2work. Tom has looked at several samples. I have re-covered in velour type material, non std colours.

Can’t remember what colours @2work has tried thus far
Evening Bob & Erling,

Yes I've found a fairly decent colour match for both Twist and Platinum. I'll have to go back through my threads to show the colour differences as they aren't a perfect match. That said I'm very happy with the results although a little lighter than factory.

The issue I was up against for obtaining th best matched fabric was not just colour, it also had to be the same texture. There are great colour matches available but the fabric itself was smooth, unlike the textured (perforated diamond type pattern) factory fabric. To achieve the best of both worlds I chose colours that were a very close match but perfect texture match.

I've reupholstered the Twist headlining in the OEM A2 and it is a little lighter but does look stunning. I have also done a few Platinum headlining, which again is a little lighter, really does look great with matching reupholstered sun visors.

Hopefully before I retire for the evening I will get the links to what I purchased along with some pictures of before and after the reupholstery, they're on here somewhere. I'm just quickly dropping in not completely finished work yet. If I don't get the links this evening then I'll add them by tomorrow lunchtime.

Edit:

Here’s what’s I used last year to reupholster the Twist headlining (and sun visors this year) in Project OEM

Here’s what I’ve used on a few Paltinum headlining and sun visors.

Same seller and the results are really good. They are both 3mm foam backed which is really plush, certainly on the sun visors, actually looks better than factory in my humble opinion.

Kind regards,

Tom

Hi Tom and others
I am looking to source material to repair a headlining - colour is beige - are the eBay suppliers the best match or are there any other suppliers - does anyone have original stock ?

Thanks
