Heated rear window

Hello All!

I'm a new member of a2oc, having just bought my first a2 a couple of days ago..

I just wondered how effective the heated rear window is on these cars? I've used it the past couple of mornings driving to work (about 40 mins on a motorway) and the heated rear window has struggled to clear the condensation (not ice) on the area from the spoiler to the top of the window.

It does work.... but poorly... And, turns itself off after 10 mins or so.

Is this how they are? Or should I ask for it to be looked at by the dealer?

(It's an 03 SE TDI 75)

Hello J Lo,

Welcome to the A2OC site. I'm not sure my rear window heater has ever caused me any particular concern. However, I know what it's like when you get a new car - you become accutely aware of how things work.

Presumably the condensation is on the outside? This is more likely to take a bit of time to disperse (as the heater element has to warm the glass through).

I usually find that the spoiler obscuring the eyeline (right in the middle of the rear window) is more of a distraction than any condensation.

If the car has been stood at the dealer for a while it could have a build up of moisture in it which makes the condenstation worse, it could even have a leak.

If it doesn't clear whan the car is warm you may need to investigate further.

Ever wondered why most dealers open the tailgates on the forecourt on decent days in winter....

I agree with Ian - you could use a leather on the inside of the back window (carefully to avoid damaging the heating elements) to physically remove some moisture from the inside of the car, rather than just evaporating it temporarily... I find the window heater clears my window in about 5 minutes or so.

Hello all,

Thanks for your replies... Rear window was much the same again this morning... It does work, it's just not effective. Even with the heater set to demist/hot and the heated rear window turned on. (speed doesn't seem to have any effect)

I think I'll invest in a squeegee

May be a better idea would be to take it back to the dealer and get it checked out. it may be that the rear heater is not working I find mine very effective clears every thing in around 5 mins to 10 mins

I Have had my car for 6 months Used my window heater for the first time today and it was very effective
