Heater blower fan oscillating

Hi guys!

I have just bought an Audi A2 1.4 petrol with AUA engine. My problem is that when I am starting the heater fan in the car at low speed the fan speed is oscillating, and sometimes it stops completly, and when I am setting the speed to maximum, than it is functioning normal on the high speed. What coul be the problem? The heater fan or the heating resistor? Under the glove box where can I find the heater resistor? The car is left hand drive.

The heater resistor is in a really awkward place, it lives inside the housing the fan connects to, if you trace back the connector to the fan you will find it, it’s not much fun to get out!

I had similar symptoms in a B5 A4 some years ago. For about 6 months when the fan stopped I used to bang the dash and it would start up again. Turned out to be the fan run out of brush length. In other words the brushes on the motor were so short that the springs behind them no longer had enough tension to hold them on the commutator. New / second hand fan or new brushes if they can be sourced.

I had the same symptoms last year - for me, it was the resistor.
The german forums have a decent picture of what it looks like behind the lhd glovebox and what to unscrew to get to it here.

When you remove the blower, clean and lubricate the bearings to make sure it is spinning freely. Also worth cleaning the "hamsters wheel" to improve the balance when running. The wheel is WHITE in colour but gets very dirty over the years of use. Do not think your problem is the resistor block but partially seized bearings that will respond well to a good clean, flush and relubrication. Replacement blower units not that expensive just make sure if you eventually need to buy one you get the correct side for your car as LHD and RHD blowers have the "snails horn" pointing in opposite directions.

Hi ballalevi. I have just bought my first A2 (1.4 with Climate Control) and I have just the same issue as you (although mine is not at the point of stopping yet... just fluctuating). Thanks, Guys, this will be really helpful when it reaches the pojnt of sufficient irritation that I want to tackle it :)

Here is something you can try IF CAREFUL. With the ignition off and the key out, remove the pollen filter from under the glovebox. Make sure you place a couple of layers of plastic on the carpet before removing the filter as this will catch the rubbish and any water. Once that is out of the way, slide the passenger seat all the way back and limbo your way into the footwell over the door sill. Now with something like a pencil and a good torch look into the empty space where the filter was and locate the blower assembly. It looks a lot like a hamsters wheel. Hold the pencil and gently push it up against the wheel then try to make the wheel rotate with the pencil. If it is at all tight or lumpy turning then the water and rubbish has got into the bearings. The blower needs to be removed thoroughly cleaned - it is WHITE when new and the bearings cleaned and lubricated. Make sure the blower now spins smoothly and does not stop immediately. If you do this in time it can save the resistor pack from blowing. I cleaned my one out 2 years ago and is working better than ever. If you have a/c make sure it is properly maintained and gassed. I use my a/c all the time summer and winter.

Thanks Audifan.. I had something similar with my wife's Seat Leon. Those bearings seemed very exposed to seizing and I got pretty good at fixing them :D
