Hi,

I have this bottun control heater control but I would like to have old style dial control.
Is it difficult to change to this?
If you have E-con s this mean I have air conditioning?
My wife had 08 polo and I think heater control was dials and to me it works easier.... or may be I'm just old skool.

Cheers

Climate Control

index.php

Manual Heater. This is NOT a/c

Assuming you have the first why would you want the second? And no they are VERY difficult and time consuming to swap between. I had a friend that took months to swap from the manual heating to climate control.

Too many buttons are faded away and confucsing my girls while driving.
I assumed that ECON will be climate control but feel like aircon is not working.
It is either don't come with it or need recharge. I like simple old style.

The Econ function disables the aircon on a car that has climate, and also on a TDI, the electrical auxhiliary heating element or Webasto pre-heater. The button is also provided on TDIs without climate (i.e the standard three-knob heater controls) for the latter purpose. A petrol car without climate won't have an Econ button.

Tell your girls not to look at it while driving, why would they want to look at it anyway? I never look at mine and rarely touch it, I have it on Auto and let it look after things, it is actually quite good at this, suspect better than a mere human,, just set desired temperature, leave it and forget about it, do not not touch! Leave ECON off so air con is active, helps deal with any condensation this way apparently.

The only time very occasionally I touch mine is to put the the blower on (top left) when heavy windscreen condensation on cold start in the maybe misplaced belief it will help clear it, once clear touch Auto to reactivate (which cancels blower).

I see many pictures of badly worn climate buttons, I don't get it!, won't happen if you don't touch but agree if yours is badly worn it is an eyesore and nice to correct. A few options from cheap stickers, do a good job if applied carefully, up to replacement hard touch climate unit but the easiest is probably send it to James for high class refurbishment found in Community>Members' services.

Manual heating controls belong in the Dark Ages but I know some disagree with reason.

Thank you for reply.
I will look into it. I think heater works but not sure if I have zircon or not.
So ECON is actually cancel air conditioning to eco-mode? I didn't have owners manual with car so I didn't know.
I will look into air conditioning unit, if this car 1.4 SE is fitted or not. If it has fitted, I think I will need re-gassed.

Re-gassing on its own might be a waste of money. There's a reason why it needs re-gassing - if it does. If the system has a leak, the condenser is the likely culprit - if it is replaced, replace the dryer as well. Other reasons for the system not working are a faulty pressure sensor (this can be changed without re-gassing), a failed temperature sensor in the evaporator and a failed compressor. A scan with VCDS might point you in the right direction.

Good Afternoon Atchi,

When active the aircon system needs/uses energy, this energy ultimately comes from fuel. Turning off aircon saves fuel, increases mpg, hence the climate button is labelled ECON short for ECONomy. Yes, pressing the ECON button turn off the aircon but note my previous warning comment about condensation.

You have aircon in fact two of the silver aircon pipes are visible in your shot of the engine earth bolt, if it works or not is another question.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that.
I don't work on modern cars so I don't usually touch anything newer than '80s.
My mini is 1968 mk2 with Suzuki Swift Gti 16v and other mini mk3 is 1970 with 993 engine.
This Audi is most modern mini(size wise) I have worked on as my wife's 2017 Polo I don't touch and my Outlander PHEV.... no where near!

I though ECON was German tern for Aircon.....haha. I did think why air con isn't working by pressing that button!
I have now bought better condition control switches with all writing readable to replace current unit off eBay. I hope it is easy to fit.
This weekend, I will be rethreading oil sump plug with top hat thread repair kit made for spark plug but my mechanic friend says this is best methods.
I also bought a driver side door hinge replacement and striker/restrictor things which is bit doggie on passenger side.
Body is excellent condition which is very unusual for me as normally I will be replacing panel but with A2... no needs!

Cheers

The AC compressor in the A2 is running whenever the engine is. There is no clutch, it is belt driven. When you select ECON, the flow of refrigerant through the compressor is reduced to a minimum (5% I believe). So, no worry about running it occasionally to keep the system lubricated etc.
Mac.

Climate buttons are reasonably easy to fit.

Very quick is you are scrapping current buttons. Ping out the big +/- buttons with two Stanley knife blades, for the smaller buttons drill suitable sized small pilot hole in button face, there is a few millimeters of void behind face, insert self tapping screw and pull button out with a claw hammer. Be careful not to mark the button housing.

If you want to keep the buttons then remove climate unit, unplug, strip down - follow your nose until button housing is free, you will need a T6 driver. Buttons push put from the back utilising small holes using a BLUNT poker, but take care not to damage the front face by causing high spots, some need considerable force.

Replacement buttons almost effortlessly push in.

Loving the sound of the '68 mini with the swift engine...I cut my teeth on minis, having owned about 17 of them in my youth...little did I realise that A2's would grab hold of the baton many years later, I seem to have lost count how many I have had now...you have good taste in cars sir!

Funny you say that.
I first saw mini when I was 9 years old... many moons ago as "The Italian Job" in Japanese!

My mini and I were featured in build in progress in Mini Magazine 2011iirc. In there I said 3 more years but took me 9 more years to be road worthy. It is Tax Except and MOT Except but everything is declared with insurance and MOT inspector checked once over. So it is good to drive but I will iron out teething problem and get it painted.
My'68 Mini is roof chopped by 2"(night time drinking thought it was easy job), raked front screen & rear screen, Webasto electric sunroof, 5 Speed gearbox with diff ratio changed to suit 13" Mini tyre sizes, Torsen LSD, EPS, Ducatti Super bike twin exhaust, roll cage, 4 pot vented discs and rear disc brakes, self designed & made beam axel with radius arms. If you can waste your time, you will see my build diary in Mini16vclub Suzuki section.
My other mini is South African mk3 which is round front end with Elf/Hornet backend.
Spec will be Suzuki Swift G10 3 pot engine with 5 speed gearbox running 10" wheels.

These are my hobby cars I build and A2 is "I always wanted car" and bought it for my 2 older girls to learn in.
I am resisting to modify it but I may have to build stainless steel exhaust as it may be on it's way out!

Oh my lord, this has just made me smile reading that!!! I've hijacked your thread so will take this to pm...you are to be saluted sir.
