Hello A2OC

Admittedly Car Throttles recent video put the A2 on the map for me, I never realised how cool they were (the A2)

Aluminium - rot free
Efficiency - very important for me as my other car does about 4-20 mpg

I hear they have isofix as standard, I have a little one coming in less than 5 weeks ?

I'm looking at the TDI 1.4 due to it having a well known drive train and engine - though would consider a petrol too, however I've read they can be troublesome and more complicated than the diesel.

Lovely forum members, please could you help me with the following:
- Any well known issues to look out for?
- Is there a for sale section in this forum, I do like buying a car from the community/enthusiast as they're generally well taken care of

Morning

Welcome along to a very active club for the A2.

I’m glad the car throttle article has already spurred interest for some.

The TDI is the bulletproof option really but the petrol shave their own charm.

Main thing to check, especially if you are going to be transporting a newborn is the front wishbones. There are 2 types cast (great) and pressed (rubbish). The pressed ones tend to rot through and fail which can be dangerous. Easy enough job to change to the solid type.

There is a marketplace section and there’s a few decent cars in there at the moment, you need to upgrade your account by donating £2, although it’s been so long since I joined that I can’t remember how to do it. Hopefully someone else can help.

Welcome.

To join the Marketplace, click your username in the main menu bar, then click account upgrade......, I think it is not automated so might be a delay while it dealt with manually.

Google A2OC.net and whatever subject you want to research to find the appropriate threads - for example, can I direct you to my very first thread “Hello from Singapore!” and therein you’ll find pertinent info on which models have what isofix setups - I too have young kids and hence this was important to me too.

Welcome to the family.

And good shout re: diesel, I'm on the outer skirts of London and moving further out soon so was thinking a diesel will be fine for outer London stuff.

My other car is a petrol so fan be used for London runs when visiting parents ? I currently own an A4 cab too, which I've just sold to my neighbour for way too cheap, but I'm not allowed to buy another car until it's gone...?

Uhhh not that it matters, but I'm a guy. The username is a reference to what I call my other car and it's engine code...

Bert when he behaves, Bertina in this case as he's being a right diva, he got wet in the thunderstorms and decided to fry a rear control unit ??‍♀️

Whatever I buy will eventually belong to the wife, and she too thinks the A2 is super cool, but I know wants a C or E class really ?

Regardless of whatever I buy, I'm glad I bumped into this community, y'all a really nice, dedicated and friendly bunch.

I suggest both you and the good lady try to take an A2 out for a test drive. You can then way up the pros and cons. You may be surprised at the cabin space. They are increasing in value, but even a fairly rough one can be brought back as can be seen by the numerous stories found on this site. If you do not already know the rear seats can be removed completely if you need to carry surprisingly large objects. Good luck. There may even be a member close to you that could let you look at or perhaps drive their car.

Sometimes it is better to get a cheap but honest car with a decent MOT / maintenance record, and spend the money on the replacement wear parts (I've replaced all tyres, shocks, springs, strut bearings, ARB bushes, drop links, filters and a valet / tidy up etc on all of our 3 A2s since acquisition), that will turn it from cheap but honest to good and honest) and then maintain with regular servicing, rather than going for something sold at top dollar with a shiny valet and still needing all the same things to be done underneath. This is, of course if buying outwith A2oc - many marketplace cars will have had a lot of this done already. Windscreen wipers can get rickety, @depronman refurbishes them to better than new.

1.4 petrols may well need most of the ignition / induction parts and possibly injectors replaced / cleaned / refurbished depending on mileage and servicing - with advice from here and a bit of spannering that was possible for me as a complete mechanical novice. The 1.6 has historically been known for issues and does need care and 98-99 octane premium fuel, but the new ECU replacement option (speak to @A2Steve) seems to have resolved the flaps / EML problem that was otherwise a potential kiss of death (along with skimped maintenance and pipe-of-death failures). For the Tdis - the 75 is anecdotally more robust than the 90 and can be remapped to similar-ish performance, although the 90 can be mapped further (but features a slightly more problematic dual-mass flywheel and turbo). Tdis can also be relatively easily swapped to a 6-speed gearbox from more recent VAG models (1.6Tdi VW / Audi / Skoda donor vehicles) that give longer legs. There are also a significant number of viable electronic retrofits that you can put on your wishlist with OEM-grade fitting from @timmus including near-essentials such as cruise control if you are doing motorway journeys.

I can vouch for the versatility as well - the depth of the rear cabin with seats and floors removed is impressive when combined with the decent aperture of the tailgate.

Well currently there are 4 for sale in London on Gumtree. Why not pop along and at least look at a couple of them.

Sorry to hear you narrowly missed out on the eBay auction last night, the FSI with an alternator issue I assume. Did you view in person? Best not dwell too much, I could say more, but let's just say IMO you missed a bargain (on the face of it).

I drive a FSI and only take interest in FSI sales, in fact I have monitored FSI sales for the last five years almost on a daily basis, sad really, almost a hobby. If you want a second opinion on an FSI drop me a PM.

FSI prices are defiantly going up, dealers with FSIs with low mileage, circa 75k, are asking 2.5k or more (even one at £5k!)., and generally whatever price level +£500 for OSS.

Could say more, bargains still around with patience.

Andy

I have some baaaaad news, in my search for an A2, I've ended up with a Mk5 Golf GT TDI 140 ? still, 53mpg when I'm being sensible, 40mpg average when I'm not. Happy days.
