Hello from newbie

Hi, thought I should say hello as a new member after lurking for a while.
I’ve been thinking about getting an A2 for a while, and I was looking at a diesel till I read about the upcoming extension of the ULEZ in London so it’s got to be petrol.

Opinions seem to be divided on the FSI. Are they potentially reliable as a daily (and only) driver? Having said that, we both commute by bike so it won’t be used everyday but it does need to be reliable.

I need to be able to fit a roof rack for bikes and/or roof box so no OSS. (Is that correct?)

Thanks
Matt

Hello and welcome. I recently sold my A2 TDI and switched to a 1.4 petrol for the very same reason (ULEZ). If it's reliability you after the "standard" 1.4 will do the job marvelously, light and nippy. Plenty has been discussed here in terms of 1.4 VS FSI, each comes with pros and cons. I had my petrol for over 6 months and if has not missed a beat! Perfect for London driving, i.e. no real need for extra horses under the bonnet.....

It is possible to use one type of roof rack on a OSS that doesn’t rest of the glass, although there is the danger of opening it while it is one which would not be good!

The 1.6 does have its issues however you do see them with higher miles. I have 2 1.4 petrols and a diesel, the 1.4 petrols both needed a number of bits doing, but now they run well. However they aren’t the fastest car but perfectly fine on the motorway in high revs and can be driven at 30 in 5th which is good. I just find the 2-3 rpm power a bit low.

However due to horror stories I have always stayed away from the 1.6 however I’ve been tempted! Do you have an idea of spec and colour you want?

Preferably a dark metallic and light interior
4 seat
Heated seats
False boot floor

In an ideal world rear electric windows

Nav and Bluetooth

I understand that heated seats, nav and Bluetooth can all be retrofitted so I could live without them, but I’d rather start with what I want.

I was drawn to the 1.6 rather than 1.4, so would be interested to hear opinions from those who’ve driven both.

Bluetooth was never an option on these and the original sat nav is quite outdated now so really you would need one where someone else has retro fitted these.

I have been toying with selling my castle red (bronze colour) one

1.6 FSI if you like tinkering and/or have a healthy bank balance (they can very easily be a money pit)
1.4 petrol far more reliable, though not as reliable as the TDI75 the 1.4 petrol engine was used across a lot of other VAG cars of a similar age and was a reliable work horse especially in the lightweight A2

Reading different threads I get the impression that the FSI is a better drive than the 1.4 but potentially more problematic. Though both appear to have their fans.
Next stage is to look at/drive both.

Castle red is lovely. What spec is she? And where are you?
