Hello i have been intent on buying an A2 for some time . I currently have some older cars namely Little Nelly my 68 series 2A Landrover , Alfa spider 949 and Saab Aero 93 ... Great cars but all heavy on running costs and fuel ! more than 22 MPG is a luxury ... So i have decided to purchase a nice A2 at last , i love the styling and of course the economy , however of the 3 engine choices i had decided on the 1.6 FSI however there seem on here to be a lot of negativity as regards this engine , is this fair as far as reliability is concerned ? . The other option is one of the TDI either the 75BHP or the 90BHP is the 90 as bullet proof as the 75 ? .
Anyway thoughts about the 1.6 FSI would be most appreciated , there do seem to be a few of these at relatively low miles around so are quite tempting whereas all the TDI do seem to be pretty high millage if that matters? ... i am expecting to do around 15000 miles a year in it...
Many thanks in advance ...

Go for a tdi 75...

90's have dual mass flywheels £1000 replacement cost. FSI's have water leak and manifold problems.

Although, there are good ones out there, the tdi 75 is pretty much the one to go for.

Yes 90"s do have a DMF but it's not £1,000 complete clutch kit with DMF is £450 plus fitting
I guess Clutch kit for a 75 is about £200 to £250 ,so its a couple hundred pounds extra for a DMF
Which gives a better gear change .
Mines just had it's first new clutch at 109k
I'VE owned 10 A2 75's and TDI 90 ever time for me
Oh just bought an Fsi and differently the smoothest drive

The above link contains a wealth of tips about the A2 if you're starting a search for a car. The buyers guide post I wrote needs updating. The guide values are inaccurate now. A2 prices have taken a hit in the last 12 months although exceptional examples don't follow the price guides and still change hands for premium money.

I agree with Terry regarding DMF. I paid 411 including VAT for mine last year from Euro car parts. Is that plus a days labour every 100k miles worth the expenditure for the added oomph and different gearing of the 90 ? I'm not sure really as I've not driven a remapped 75.
Certainly don't regret buying a 90. However with the potential of problems with the variable vane turbo on the 90 to consider as well - the 75 has to be stated as the most reliable option.

only my opinion but if you're expecting to travel 15k can year and will keep the car for a few years then TDI is the most sensible option in respect of longer term overall costs.

The op is asking about which is the most reliable model A2 rather than the best.

Even though i would say the tdi 90 was my fav (Ive owned 5 90's) the 75 is imo the most reliable/bulletproof.

My first 90 that i purchased from Audi had to have a new DMF fitted under warranty. The car was only 18 months old at the time when purchased and was sold to me with the DMF problem.

I do love the 90 though and would buy another.

Regarding my DMF price... I quoted a £1000 as including fitting. Im sure the Audi warranty cost on my DMF was over a grand. Although that was a Audi garage and DMF price. A local garage can of course do it less than a grand.

LuK clutch kit for my tdi 75 is £120 as I'm about to buy one.
