Hi! Found a 13 mm bolt laying in the engine bay under the coolant expansion tank on my a2 petrol 1.4. (on top of the gear box) It has some red paint on it and seems kind of important (!).

Where does it belong? !!

Cheers,

When you say 'a 13mm bolt' do you meah spanner size or thread diameter. Also a pic of the bolt may help with identification

Some pictures!

Its the bolts head that needs a 13 mm key. On the picture of the engine bay, you see the bolt laying on some black gear mountings. Actually, I found it 2 cm further back in between the gray chassis and the black gear mountings.

Good luck with the identification! Your help is much appreciated! I cant figure out where it belongs.

My TDi engine bay is a bit different so I could not identify any similar bolt.
Q. on picture 2 there is a hole just next to the mystery bolt. It looks like it has a witness mark around the hole of a similar size to the washer on the bolt. The other bolt head in the shot also appears to be similar and have a washer on it. Are you sure its not from this location

Hi pgodoe

Have a look at the top of strut as it looks like one of the bolts that hold the top mount.
Their should be 3 that hold the mount on.
It is at the top and back of water bottle hope this helps

Thanks for the replies:)

There are a lot of places that fit these measures, but but its non of your suggestions. The special thing about this nut is the red paint. Seems like the red color means something i Audi terms. Some other nuts are marked with white.

It could be that at some point some work had been done they dropped a bolt, unable to find it so fitted another then this has just appeared from wherever it fell

Thats what I thought as well. I have done some major work on the car my-self (taken the hole front off, and the dash inside. Maybe I just have dropped it and could not find the appropriate bolt afterwards. Problem is, I cant really remember. I could have forgot to put it back on.

Just wanted to check with this marvelous forum. People know and see the strangest things around here:)
