Hi all
Apologies for first post being a techy question,my names john and I passed my test 6 months ago,my brother found me my 51 plate a2 1.4 petrol which I love to bits however it's just started playing up which is a bit unnerving as it seems to do it in awkward situations, traffic lights, junctions etc

It will start idling lumpy with the engine management light flashing and has no power to pull away,if I turn it off and on again it starts again and will pull away but is really down on power.
This has happened 3 times now, once after a long motorway trip, the other two times on my way to work ( normal driving).
It's not been run low on fuel and it had its winter service two weeks ago.

Apologies if this is a common fault that I've missed elsewhere on the forum, just panicking at the moment.

Hope you can help,

Cheers ;)

We are going to have a go at cleaning the throttle body tomorrow to see if that gets a result....my bad, didn't read that bit...sorry....

Hi
No need to apologise. You are asking for help and there are many members who would gladly give you that help.
So please do ask if you are ever unsure.

The best option is to get someone to run done diagnostics on the car to see hat errors have occurred. Where on the country are you (the post code is not one I am familiar with) there may be local members with the diagnostic cable.

Good luck

Dans right,we are indeed in Gloucestershire,Stroud to be exact :D

Will have a go at the throttle body tomorrow anyway,my brother plays with cars a bit but not so much modern stuff, his newest is an 87 passat estate! But the guide on here is very helpful so will follow that, can't hurt ;)

You should try and get/ get access to, some way of reading the ECU for error codes. You can either invest in the full monty VAGCOM PC software, or buy a cheap code scanner off Ebay, or see if there's someone on the forum who lives near you who has VAGCOM and can scan the car for you...

Right well Throttle body removed.cleaned and replaced today, huge thanks to whoever wrote the guide..took my brother all of about 20 minutes :p was very dirty and clogged up.

Also got a mate to come up with laptop and plug it in and it threw up misfire on 1 and 4 fault codes and also throttle respose sensor......so fingers crossed what weve done will sort it out?

Watch this space

Cheers ;)
