Hi Noticed something not right with the car and need some advice
The photo below shows the damaged part which i think is the drive shaft? How easy is this part to replace? how much is it? should we continue to drive like it?

Hi Alexwharton
I dont think this is serious and if it were my car i'd tap the metal back into shape around the driveshaft then get it fixed when convenient.
Ref the attached diagram, item 9 - it looks like there is a thin metal sleeve pressed onto each end of the main shaft to locate the centre weight. These sleeves will have no effect on the strength of the main shaft but long term, corrosion could creep under the sleeve and cause problems.
The shaft looks like it is available as a spare part but if you'r not doing the work yourself it may be more cost effective to have the complete driveshaft replaced

Cheers Spike

Thanks for the advice. From the elsawin service disk it looks like you need some specialist equipment/tools to swap them.

i agree with spike tap it back and if you are worried about corrosion getting in hammerite it black

I took off the drive shafts from another car it is straightforward there are spline bolts fixing it in place to the engine and you have to atke off the front hub nut and suspension bolts that go into the hub then you can just lift/pull it out - but do what spike says as altho disconcerting it is very likely that it is nothing to worry about if you do as susggested.
Taking it in to an audi garage will result in a suggested replacement and hefty labour bill i bet

When i painted my calipers i noticed something very similar like you yours (ok not as bad but still...)

I also put it back in place and its fine, don't worry about it, if it is the cosmetics your are worried about, then by all means have it changed, but it is not a critical part of the car

Taunton audi had the car all day today. I have no good way to describe the service they gave and there knowledge in repairing cars. I rang them 2 weeks ago and asked them to look at this and repair or replace as they thought necessary under the years warranty i have from them.

This afternoon the 1ST call i received was to tell me they drove the car and noticed many noise's but none that were a problem. i told them what i booked the car in for(problem with drive shaft). Half an hour later they ring me to tell me theres no fault, no lose metal so i go to collect the car.

The lady at the counter was adamant i made the fault up and try-ed to charge me £144 for the inspection so i asked for the technicians notes to which her reply was "cant do that". She then went on to say i had to wait for the technician who looked at the car or pay before they gave the car back. So i said id wait and show him the fault.

We waited nearly half an hour before some one came over a different person who said the technician i was waiting for had gone home. we went for a drive so he could show me the mystery noise but none of them happened.

Went back to the garage got the car on the ramp and i then pointed to the clearly visible damage whilst noticing the sleeve was now completely missing. The black paint under neath was now peeling off and the bit where the metal sleeve was hanging off had badly rusted.

After arguing whether there should or should not be a sleeve we got another A2 airborne and you guessed it the sleeve was there. I also told the technician, i knew they removed the sleeve and had a picture of it before they worked on it his face nearly hit the floor.

The problem now they know theres a fault is getting them to fix it under warranty as they say all they can do it paint it and refuse to replace the sleeve. Any body have any advice on what to do next.

Sorry for the long winge. But i would like to warn other people to stay well away from taunton audi Seem like they'd be more than happy to rip you off.

a letter pehaps to audi uk?
Bloody disappointing when you get rubbish service like that. Theyve made it worse as theyve taken the sleeve off. I wouldnt approach another dealer until youve had aa response from audi uk
Hope evrything goes alright for you

Exactly mirrors my experience of them - i think I might have mentioned this before. I dealt with them over my A2 requiring the new clutch. Apart from diagnosing as needing a new gearbox, and taking 6 weeks _not_ to tell me whether the (not required) gearbox was in or not (despite three calls from me), I turned up on their forecourt as the car was by now practically undriveable, and parked it and gave them the keys. This was the only way I could get the job moving.

They actually told me to drive it 1/2 way home and call Audi Assistance who would provide me a courtesy car (in a car which basically had no clutch!).

When I had my S3 serviced there, they couldn't even tell me definitely whether that had put in long-life (for AVS) oil.

If you dealt with the service rep (woman) that I did, I felt she was pretty uncompromising (not to say rude) for the privilege of paying £100 an hour for labour which misdiagnosed the problem.

I'll be trying Yeovil or Cardiff next. I'm told Bristol are rubbish too.

A friend of mine local to that area takes his A4 3.0 tdi quattro to an independant, I'll find out where.

dealer league table?

not sure if this has been done before, but if the A2OC ran a short 'internal' survey of dealers, taking a bit of care and applying a degree of professionalism to make it credible, we could produce a league table, send it to all the dealers under the A2OC brand, and mail it wider if poss (audi UK?) to raise the profile of poor providers of bloody expensive services.

just a thought, logistics of doing such clearly costs money I appreciate but sure this could be overcome, and you never know it may make them sit up, audi drivers at whatever level are renowned for brand loyalty as milton keynes Head office will tell you, also worth peeing some of them off when they see thier names in a poor light, especiially if the survey is also circulated to local rags.

by the way crewe audi not great, shrewsbury audi much better

Judging by the reponses on this forum, from what appears to be the majority of individuals who take their cars in for service or problems, a high level of customer DISSATISFACTION exisits, which Audi appear to choose a blind eye too, or do they actually care enough to audit their network to ensure they deliver to the standards they advertise, in which case their appears to be a large disconnect.
I work in IT Outsourcing and have to deliver to a high standard continually over the period of a contract of possibly 5 years or more and if we were to deliver service against the Audi model, be out on our ears within 12 months, so come on Audi, finger out and get your network up to the standards you say you are so passionate about

Hi alanb the women was called George and in my opinion should nt be on a front desk were she has to deal with customers as her attitude was unsuitable. What annoys me the most is that they could'nt see it was broke even tho they were told exactly what the problem was. If my Mrs had collected the car i know i would have lost £144 because she would have paid and drove off beliving what she had been told. Its only because i knew it was damaged and argued untill they put it on the ramp and i pointed at it. Think ill try audi in marsh barton exeter next.
