Help - warning light and stuttering engine

I just got my car back from an mot, it passed! But Im worried that the engine was messed with and the car is now ill. It stutters in first gear and when sitting idle, it shakes and drops in power just as you get a bite on first gear, I need it for the easter weekend to do my shopping etc, but don't want to drive it in case I kill it.

Please help me! Im very scared. I called the dealer who done the mot work on wed, and they are closed for easter, so I've no idea what to do,I think something has been done that made it this way for its mot...

thanks buddy - guess this inside my 3 months warranty is good news as it seems common in the a2 1.6 - Can I just tell him this is the problem or should I have him find that out?

How much is a coil pack?

Cheers again.

Sorry, don't know much about the petrol varieties, being a TDi owner, but are you sure it's wise to drive any car fitted with a catalytic converter when one cylinder is not firing? Surely the unburnt fuel dumped into the exhaust will overheat the cat and end up with a big bill? I'd be careful!

thanks for the advice - got a lend of a mates car till wed when dealers open, I'll ask him if he thinks I should drive it to him or have him come get it? How much is a coil pack and how long can I get out of one?

Not sure on the price at the present time £25-45?? each? But they are coming down in price as more cars use them. (in general)

how long? It depends on the quality of the components. VAG group had a major problem with EGR valves a couple of years ago, I had 3 in 6 months of onwing a new Beetle, i think its improved now. So its not easy to say, the ones you have could be original and therefore part of a early batch. They may fit new improved ones or just ones from a different batch that may last the life time you own it.. Thats a bit of a stretch but you get the idea

Don't think its only a Audi problem though, we buy 100's at a time for Renault's as they always go.

Coil pack prices have fallen significantly. Think they're under £15 each from the £70 odd they were 2 years ago. Chris if your A2 is under 5 years old you can claim for coil packs on Audis 5 year extended warranty for 1,6fsi coil packs. The problem was so big and for all VAG group cars using this component that they made a special offer. The good news is that the new packs work a treat and are reliable. I had 7 coil packs replaced under warranty but since new designed ones were fitted I've had no trouble in 2 years.

just had the coil pack go on my 1.6FSI this morning as I was on me way to Tesco Seacroft. Phoned Audi Leeds while MrsHB did the shopping. They tell me that the 5 year warranty only applies to the TT coil packs. Any one post a link or a phone number so ~I can get Audi to do the right thing!

Also are these coil packs used on any of the Skoda range? Skoda garage is down the road in Stourton and likely to be cheaper if I cant get a warranty.

Ta.

As far as I know, the warranty is on ALL coil packs. Don't know about Skoda, but the part number you need is 036 905 715 E - £29 from a dealer.

Cheers,

Mike

iv'e owned my A2 just months but have replaced 3 coils, and carry a spare in the glovebox, lucky i get a trade deal at GSF.

fixed!
Went to GSF and got trade price on four coils and a set of plugs.
Coils were £23.90 each plus vat. Plugs were just under £3 each. It was the coil nearest the passenger side that had gone. The plugs electrode had that tell tale oiliness on them. Replaced all 4 as a precaution, but kept two of the good ones as "spares". Took me 20 minutes from start to finish.
Don't you just love those days when you end up £120 lighter by lunch!

one point to note...I fitted the genuine VAG parts. They had non-oem coils for £15. These look different to the propper VAG ones so didn't take the risk for the sake of £36 extra for four.

Hi CHB you need to speak to Audi customer care, try 08457 573340

Audi dealer are not the best informed. If you struggle try reminding them of all the issues with coil packs initially! But rememeber your car must not yet be 5 years old to be able to make a claim.

If you are ever over in Skipton there's a very good independant garage - Aire Valley Workshop 01535 795444. I use them all the time now. They are former VW dealer White Rose staff, my previous Passat 1,8T SE was looked after by them there and also a mk3 GTI Golf.

RE the EGR problem. I have just had anew one fitted and since the car runs rough at constant revs. What was the nature of the problem?

You were right - coils it was - my dealer told me that having the engine bay cleaned out when damp is known to do the packs in. He told me how common it was and had a bloke call out to my house and set up shop to fix the car there! how cool!

He done the job and posted my key in the mail box, I went home to find her all ready to go, is it me or do I actually feel a difference in the cars drive prior to the failure?

I love it. Good job, lovely car.
