Help! Weirdest oil leak I have ever seen.

Fair play Phil, what you have found looks sensible - I hope that sorts it!

Thank you, it did. Been chasing leaks down the back of the engine for years and it was primarily that gasket. Had a good look at it and it couldn’t have done the job without a couple of blobs of liquid gasket.
Numerous minor leaks have been fixed before I finally tracked down the big one. Fingers crossed for a dry engine for sometime.

When I removed my tandem pump, I only changed the two rubber seals (the small bottom one and the bigger top one). Though a black one , just like yours, was included in the kit. But there was none when I took it of. Is there something different between the 1.2TDI (mine) and the 1.4TDI?
Picked up the OEM tandem pump gasket for my '03 1.4TDi and it's just the rubber bits also!

Those are not the rubber bits I’m referring to The soft gasket material I’m referring to is on the pump to head pressed steel gasket.

I thought your pump was a few weeks old? Take it back to the supplier and get them to replace it; it should not need a seal kit after a few weeks.

Lets see what you fin when you remove the pump, if the black one is there or not.

Yes that is the seal that caused my oil leak. It was there, I fit it, but it is obvious to me now that the seal I fit could not have done the job without a few blobs of liquid gasket.
This gasket is unlikely to be the cause of allypug’s starting problems unles there is diesel all over the back of his engine and on his gearbox and it is not leaking from the pump end plate. If it is leaking from the end plate then £100+ worth of hoses will be wrecked by now. Also there would be a very strong warranty claim and claim for consequential damage.

This is what Audi Bedford gave me when I asked for the pump-to-head gasket. Yep the pump isn't very old, it is however leaking oil from somewhere, possibly due to over tightening the 4 mounting bolts by the garage. It's going back to the garage very soon to be 'looked at' along with the aircon they 'fixed' which stopped blowing cold 2 weeks later!
The engine oil smells pretty bad also, maybe from the original pump failing and leaking diesel into it, although the garage said engine oil was entering the fuel system. I'll get them to change it and if the smell returns then this new pump is toast also, unless just a new gasket fixes my leak/starting issue

There are many seals in a Luc tandem pump:

The three largest are pump to head, vac pump to pump main casting and fuel pump cover plate. I suspect your supplier has sold you a vac pump to pump main casting seal but I'm not sure it is for a Luc pump:

The pump to head seal is a pressed steel gasket looking like this:

If you have the facilities to do an oil change I wouldn't drive a further mm without fresh oil.

It looks like I've been given the shaped rubber seals that fit on the steel gasket. I told them the oil smelled bad so maybe they'll change it, otherwise I'll do it, losing faith with them but took it back to them to have another go as I don't intend paying for it twice.
Soon I'll be in danger of paying in repairs what I paid for the car 2 months ago! A right lemon compared to my last one.

I feel for you mate and hope the problems are resolved soon.

My own experience of A2s is they go on and on and then suddenly drop dead. I’ve spent £2.5k on my car this year and it is not yet to my satisfaction. However at least I have the advantage of being able to DIY the vast majority of jobs.

I read it time and time again, when the car drops dead it is prohibited to have it garage maintained. I’ll start a thread on my experiences and I hope your car is not as bad as mine. With a few glitches sorted hopefully you will have reliable motoring.

Aww man! Where is that coming from? The feed to the Webasto maybe?

I’m fairly certain it is the end cover of the tandem pump. It leaked in 2013 and ruined a set of cooling pipes and some electrics. It’s a Luk (or Luc?) pump and the end cover leaks. An issue with tapped hole depth was advised by Spike.
I thightened it all up and replaced the plumbing. By early 2017 it was leaking again so I rebuilt the pump and put yet another set of plumbing on my things to do list. 18 months later it’s gone again.
Not messing about this time and with the plumbing costing £100+ I’m going to attempt to replace the Luk with a Bosch pump. The Bosch pump has a solid casting and so has no end cover to leak and trash the plumbing and electrics.

Hopefully hear about mine sometime today. At least I've got a very random fun courtesy car to play with.. an old Seat Leon Cupra 20V Turbo, although £30 fuel lasts me most of the week in the A2, 1.5 days in the Seat.

Got my fingers crossed for you; hope it gets sorted.

How did you get on?

I’m waiting for a new pump to arrive from Germany.

No word from the garage yet, don't mind as I'm putting 130 miles a day on their courtesy car instead of the A2, I'll be calling them later today though.

I was once in that situation clocking up big mileage in courtesy car. After 4 months I received a call; “would you by any chance have our courtesy car?” I replied “yes, would you by any chance have my A4”. Cheapest big mileage motoring I ever did.
