The engine warning lamps occassionally lights up (about once every 2 or 3 months) and VAGCOM reports this error code

1 Fault Found:
16885 - Vehicle Speed Sensor: Implausible Speed Signal
P0501 - 35-00 --

What sensor is it and why do I get it (so very) occasionally? Is it possible to change the offending sensor myself or is it a dealership job?

Thanks

Thanks. Does anyone know where the speed sensor is located on a 2000 A2 1.4 SE?

Hi wngl
Not sure which gearbox model code is on your car but the vehicle speed sensor should be located just above the point where the driveshaft enters the gearbox casing - on the passenger side I think.
This sensor provides a signal for the speedo so does this play up when you get the warning light ?

Cheers Spike

Can't say I have noticed anything amiss when the engine management light comes on. Now that you have mentioned this, I will be on the look out. Thanks
