Heu - Misano Colour Storm TDi 75, OSS

Muska

A2OC Donor
So after seeking a bit of advice from the forum on this lovely Colour Storm that was for sale locally to me, I decided to bide my time a little till the price dropped close enough to my intended budget that I felt a deal could be reached. Last weekend a deal was done and I drove him home :)

Here is Heu

Spec:
74k
Full service history
1 previous owner from new
Opensky (currently broken sky)
Rear PDC
Passenger airbag deactivation switch in glove box
Rear bench
CD Changer in boot
42L fuel tank (a pleasant surprise at the fuel station!)
Heated mirrors (swapped from Bert)
Rear cup holder (swapped from Bert)

Audi A2 mats
Audi rubber front mats
All original glass/panels

This for some time has been my dream spec A2 that was purchasable.

I'm going to do a proper set of pictures as soon as I have enough time but he's very very tidy, just a couple of minor imperfections I want to address:
Front passenger door needs a Depronman check strap asap! (Done)
1 rear arch needs touching up (Done)
Under handbrake storage tray to fit
Scratch near the A2 badge (Done)
Front wheels need a refurbish (might as well do all 4) (Done)
Wiper arm rivets are tired, will replace the arm (Done, brand new arm from Crew Audi)
OSS requires fixing (Done, complete refurbishment from @Kleynie & Adam)
Headlining is sagging a little at the rear
Water drainage from rear spoiler has left some marks to one side of the lower glass (might consult a detailer about what would be best for that, also some tide marks just under the spoiler and the underside of the spoiler) (Done)
Private plate (coming soon)
Mud flaps (Done)
Cruise control/Remap/Electric bolster sports front seats & some VCDS changes from Timmus when a suitable visit date is arranged (Done, minus the seats)
New number plates required so I can fit my A2OC plate holders! (Done)
I couldn't help but purchase one of these:

I would really like to go for an OEM with this car and just some subtle improvements, so for the seats I already have a selection with the red middle panel and I'll be having the sports seats re-trimmed to match the standard Misano CS front seats asap (if anyone wants to recommend somewhere I'm all ears)
A bit further down the line I'll be looking at a steering wheel re-trim and adding the media control airbag panel and a few other factory options along with rear electric windows if a full setup ever pops up for sale, but it's all secondary to the list above.

So as it stands I currently own 3 A2's (never thought I'd say that when I first bought Bert!) so I will be selling the other two very soon

I look forward to attending a social event with the club in the near future (the next few don't work out for me unfortunately) Thanks for reading :)

Very nice Muska :)

With regards steering wheel etc, are you thinking of going A1 wheel or retrimming an SE wheel with steering wheel controls?

Thanks, I was intending to go for the standard SE wheel with the controls, re-trimmed to be a little chunkier, so it feels more like the Sport wheel to hold, as I can notice the difference going between the two and I find the standard SE a little skinny.

So nice when you finally get your dream spec A2....Well done! I just found mine last week, after years of looking

Sport MFSW! :D

It's just like the OEM 3-spoke steering wheel, except you've got stereo controls. There are currently two of these in existence... one in @alanb's A2 and one in my Aladdin's Cave, which will (eventually) end up in my own A2. More can be conjured upon request.

Cheers,

Tom

I wont hold my breath for one of those coming up!

So, the steering wheel that Kleynie has found is not a multifunction steering wheel (capable of controlling the stereo) but is a tiptronic steering wheel (capable of changing gear in an automatic). It has an 8Z part number due to the heritage of this 3-spoke steering wheel design, but it was only ever fitted to automatics such as the contemporaneous A4 and A6. The conversion process from tiptronic to multifunction is fairly long and complex, hence why there are only two in existence so far. Not only do I have to make modifications to the wiring and circuitry inside the steering wheel itself, but I have to make a custom controller that lives under the dashboard.
Originally, the tiptronic buttons on the left and right perform the same purpose: gear change up/down. Once converted to multifunction, one side controls volume up/down and the other side controls radio station, tuning, track skipping, etc. When complete and installed in the car, the Sport MFSW is also fully diagnosable via VCDS.

My Sport MFSW is solid leather, whereas Alan's (as shown in the photo above) has been retrimmed in perforated leather.

Cheers,

Tom

A couple of questions (already!) :D

I went to a local body shop to get a quote for respraying the grey arches this morning, firstly I was wondering what colour they are, I'm sure I saw a paint code talked about on here a while back, its the same as the wing mirrors/roof on a Colour Storm if I remember correctly? Secondly, do the arches split from the wings? I'm not really sure and the painter was saying ideally that he would want to split them for prep etc if possible.

Yesterday I managed to have a tentative play with the OSS, after lots of clicking initially (which I'm presuming means the motor has stripped teeth and a replacement would be required?) it seemed to catch, lifted and retracted. Getting it back housed however was much more nerve wracking! I wont be attempting that again any time soon as one front corner was reluctant to house and it took some shuffling and manual assistance. Is there a way to manually wind the roof in future when it comes to cleaning the runners/re-greasing etc? I'm not sure whats required to fix the roof yet, I'm hoping I can draw on the knowledge of the forum as I'd love to save an original part if possible :)

Firstly, welcome to the Colourstorm fold, a lovely car you have there, I love mine!
With regards the front arches they are moulded with the wings so unmountable, the rear arches are removable though, a real shame Audi never did the fronts removeable imo
Cheers Jeff

@Muska with regards the manual closing of the roof, I never checked this when I owned one with OSS but apparently under the rear courtesy light above back seats there was a Allen key of some description in there for this very operation, I may stand corrected by a current owner!
Cheers Jeff

The Allen key is located inside the front lighting unit Jeff; it is here that you can operate the roof manually. Instructions are listed in the user manual.

Cheers.

Usually its not the motor that's at fault, its the part that houses the cables that pulls apart, thus the motor losing grip. In this case no amount of turning with the allen key will do anything as it will continue to slip.
The reason the cables slip is that the ends, where they meet the runners are plastic, the plastic breaks and the cables become detached from the runners, the bits of plastic usually end up wedged in the rails, hence making the roof very hard to operate. Even though the cables become detached from the runners they sometimes still operate as the crimps on the end of the cables catch on the runners and still move them. There are repair plates available to fix the cables back onto the runners but really the roof has to come out and be stripped down/cleaned/lubricated and any bent parts straightened or replaced. This is the only way to do the job properly.
In addition to the above fault, sometimes the rear panel may fail to operate as the plastic feet on the rear runners break and stop them hooking up with the front runners. In this case the rear runners have to be replaced at a cost of £250 (Audi only). This is when the costs start mounting up especially if you are paying labour.
The best way is to whip the roof out and swap with a healthy one. I plan on offering this service soon once I get enough spares to refurb existing roofs, this should be a nice cheap solution if I can pull it off.

Thanks Kleynie, that's a very informative post. You're exactly right about the manual wind not working, I had a little go earlier and just more clicking! I look forward to you being able to offer your services :)

All those with OSS [dreading BSS} await updates expectantly!

I have the day off today so after a quick wash I set about giving the plastics and window seals a bit of attention.

This stuff is awesome for tyres, I used it since back in my VW show days and keeps the wet look for longer than I've found with any other product. Also, a little goes a long way. I also find is amazing for anything with a mat finish and window rubbers etc. Here is a little 50/50 shot, I just rub it on and buff straight off for a nice even mat look finish :) I use it all along the sills, inside lip of the arches etc.

You can see the paint that needs touching up in this one, all arches and wing mirrors are being repainted at the end of July

A small addition

I also fitted the A2OC stickers to the rear quarter windows today (thanks for sending them so fast!) It's too hot to polish today but I'll pop back out once I've cooled down a bit and give the glass a polish. Still extremely happy with my purchase :)

(If the pictures look a little grainy it's because I never checked the ISO and it had been left at 800)
