Heu - Misano Colour Storm TDi 75, OSS

Updates with Hue have been a bit slow of late as I've been ill for the last few months but today he had his MOT (I've almost owned him a year now) he passed with flying colors requiring only a number plate bulb. Which of course unearthed the famous rusted beyond use screws so new lenses and stainless screws have just hit my order list for the near future!

I also had a package from @Rickmeister with my parts from Audi Tradition.

A HUUUGE thanks to Rick for everything, an absolute pleasure to deal with :)

These will form part of the rear end refresh I'm going to do, there is a scratch near the A2 badge currently so I'm going to remove the current badges have the tail gate touched up/painted and refit. Also, where the spoiler seal has blown there is staining behind the rear glass, I did look into a new rear glass/spoiler but the cost is a little more than I can afford at the minute, perhaps next year. For now I'll remove the glass and re seal it once cleaned out. Also if possible I want to split off the lower rear tailgate panel to give everything a really thorough clean/detail. @A2Steve I think you may have removed a tailgate glass before, any tips for removal/refitting and what to secure it with?

At the end of the month my original sport wheels are going to be refurbished, I was so smitten with @Special edition wheels at Stamford Hall I can't wait to get mine done! Once I have them back I'll be ceramic coating them and most likely selling the Pepperpots now the car wont be used in winter. I'll likely get them refurbished first so they're nice and mint for someone.

That just leaves me with a small mountain of parts in the house to have fitted... ?

The rear screen has to be cut out professionally. It's double bonded so needs the right tools to do.it without cracking the glass. I was charged £80 to remove the screen and refit when I was fitting a votex rear.

I did my number plate light replacement last week & took the opportunity to clean 19 years of grime found underneath , took this 58/42%
Shot for the record it was meant to be 50/50 but got carried away.
Keep up the good work
Keith.

Muska. In a word - no. Assuming you have a set of trim removal tools it is a case of easing it off gently each side a little at a time. A bit like the internal cover on the tailgate, you feel you are getting nowhere and then - success.
It is the most ridiculous design anybody could ever have thought of to get access to a number plate light.
What was wrong with just screwing the complete unit from the outside, Audi?
Good luck :) .

Thanks Keith, what a difference! Was the lower panel easy to remove?
Best advice I think is watch YouTube video first & remove the interior panel to gain access to wiring for lights & lock , I broke 2 steel clip locators on mine , clips have surface rust preventing smooth removal.
A decent set of trim removal tools helps immensely but the bottom panel will come off & goes back on nicely.
Keith.

Muska - there is a short cut if you have a Dremel or similar and can get a a good enough slot in the rusted screw(s) to get them out. Does not matter if you smash the no plate lens as you have to replace it anyway. (In fact it will make it easier to get the rusted screws out if you prise the old clear lens away carefully).

If you can do that you can just replace the number plate light clear lens with some decent screws (having changed the duff bulb first of course!)

It saves ripping the tailgate apart to replace the whole light unit.

You still have to buy a full unit (about £14 through ECP I think) - but you just use the clear lens / new screws.

Thanks to rick from me also. Tried to get the a2 badge also but a combination of me not knowing the part number and also a misunderstanding of me asking for the 1.4tdi badge plus "the a2 badge" which I think rick thought I meant as the TDI badge! :)

@Muska for future ref what's the part number of the a2 insignia badge itself?

Cheers
Cheechy, did I get the order wrong... should I order again?

Thanks for the tips, I do quite fancy taking the tail gate apart though, it fits in well with the scratch that needs a repair and I would quite like to clean behind it!

No worries rick as I said at the time I didnt have the part number so completely my fault.

If you are doing another round of orders then let me know and I will look to get the rest ordered.

Thanks again for your help

Today I dropped Heu's wheels off at the powder coaters for a refurbishment. Looking forward to picking them back up tomorrow afternoon when they'll be polished at home followed by ceramic coating inside and out.

Next I removed the lower rear panel

Which revealed lots of dirt and polish residue for me to set about cleaning this afternoon!

Getting the panel separated was not too difficult thanks to the good advice here, trim tools were a must, as was a little more force than you might think necessary.

You can see the scratch near the A2 badge now

Popped over to the local paint shop to get booked in for the end of the month, although they said £250 to paint it, which seems a little steep for this, or perhaps i'm a little off with my expectations. Once the rear end is all back together I'll be 3 stage machine polishing the rear before fitting the new badges I recently got.

I'm pressing ahead a bit with Heu now, I've had a few parts to fit for ages which I'm just working out a date for and with these latest round of bits he'll be looking cleaner than ever  As luck would have it I started on the stain to the rear glass with some Gtechniq G4 glass polish and found that the staining lifted straight away, with none on the underside at all! You can see in the shot above that the area is now stain free, I just have a bit more work to do around the spoiler to remove some water marks.

More pics tomorrow when the wheels are back :)

Shop around for paint quotes, £250 (+ VAT???) seems OTT to me as well. I would be expecting round the £100 mark.

Andy

Thanks Andrew, I'm glad it's not only me who thinks it's a little steep. £250 was inclusive of VAT though!

Rear lower cleaned, decontaminated, polished and waxed. I know it will never get seen again once it's back together but it just pleases me knowing it will be clean, even in the parts that wont ever be seen ?
