Honda Accord Diesel Report

Have now had the car for around 4 weeks and 2300 miles, no faults, no niggles.
Averaging 50MPG so far, not bad for a car this big, most of the miles have been on the motorway at 75 with cruise set.
Handling not quite up to the Mondeo but way better than the Passat it replaces. Engine is magnificent, quiet and refined - more so than our PETROL A2!! - gearing is high but that suits me. It does not like 5th below 35 but the payback is that 75 is below 2000 revs in 5th. Unlike the Mondeo it grumbles before it stalls so you can recover it - the Ford TDCi doesnt give any warning it stalls like flicking a switch. Performance (140bhp) doesnt feel any different to the Passat (150bhp 1.8T) but then I couldn't use all the passat's power at low speed because it did not have ASR and the Honda does.
Seats are very comfortable having had four uninterupted hours in it. Stereo is magnificent, but have not found all the speakers yet.
The thought that has gone into the design is endless, there is stowage space under the boot floor designed to take the retracting cargo cover, enough boxes for all my clutter without filling the glove box and if you want to close the boot manually the motor steps in and does the last couple of inches for you. Having it open itself as we push the trolley up to the car in Tesco's car park is great.
Adjustment on the automatic wipers allows you to tune the frequency of the wipe - most cars you are stuck with what it thinks is necessary - and it works very well. You are not stuck with frequent wipes on an almost dry screen or too intermittent on a wet one.
All I need to do now is find out where to mask the headlights for driving in France.
We moved house two weeks ago and havn't found the digital camera yet, when it turns up and the car is clean will post a photo.

Why are NEARLY all the A2s in Lichfield silver ? ? ?

Very good, Ian. So far this seems to have been a very good buy.

Well, enjoy the car. You can expect to turn heads for quite some time, IMO. This car will never look boring!
Cheers,
Edo

I have noticed the Accord (both estate and saloon) is appearing more and more in group tests. Always a sign it is amongst the best I think.

Enjoy your car!

2 Month Update.

Have just returned from six days in France (La Rochelle) and 1600 miles. This car continues to impress, performance is effortless and at 90 on the autoroutes it is quieter than the turbo Passat - and that was a car that got quieter above 85!

Economy over 6300 miles is 50mpg average with best of 53 and worst of 47 (Nearly all at 90). The wife still tells me to fill up every 300 miles despite that being less than half a tank used, she didn't beleive me on 1st May when I said we would not need diesel til Tuesday (everything closed in France for Bank Holiday/Sunday/Monday). Not bad for a big estate capable of 124mph and 0-60 in 10.4 seconds!

Sound system is also magnificnet, when you turn it up it gets louder where it is supposed to but the quiet bits remain quiet. Now I understand why those who have it rave about the Bose upgrade - still not found the eigth speaker though!

Exclusivity - I see more Porche Cayennes! To date only seen four tourers and only one other diesel (a saloon). The only car I have had which attracted a small crowd - on an Aire near Poitiers, don't know if Honda are selling them in France yet.

Niggles so far are
1. CD Player does not have a "shuffle" button
2. Dash illumination levels for "Lights on" / "lights off" are not independent, just a set level of difference.
3. The rear wiper does not clean the top inch of its radius unless it is left on. First couple of wipes do not seem to touch this area.
4. Windscreen steams up on cold damp mornings unless A/C in on.
Nothing serious then!

Not so! You have always been able to tune the VW automatic wipers!!! The exact same toggle switch on the top of the wiper arm that controls the intermitent speed of the wipers on the A2 controls the frequency of the auto wipers on a VW. You leave them in intermittent and adjust the toggle to one of its 4 positions for how sensitive you wanted it to be... ie goes on for flourecent lights as you enter a tunnel or not! :)

Johann

Never driven a VAG car with automatic wipers, just C Class Mercs and Mondeos and a Peugeot 206 where you are stuck with the rate the system considers suitable. Havn't had them come on for a tunnel yet.

Best joke about the C Class is that it can automatically turn its lights on but when you stop it cannot turn them off - it beeps to tell the driver to do it when the key is removed! Too many auto gadgets and they becomes annoying.

I agree... there was a 206 behind me the other day at dusk... the bloody thing's lights kept flashing at me as it could not decide to be on or off... behind every tree they came on it seemed! Auto wipers are GREAT... auto lights something I will disable at the first corner...

So how do you switch the C-class lights off then?
