Horn location

Have any easier ways been found yet. Original Horn on our 2003 ( 53 ) 1.4 SE Petrol has gone very quiet and the MOT Test is coming up. It’s done this before after lack of use but usually always came right again after a couple of Toots. Not today but it has had even less use than ever since mid March !

Easier, yes though not necessarily elegant. The feed and earth for the horn exit the (UK) o/s headlight loom just before the headlight. It is possible to cut them to fit a new horn in a space of your choosing though you'll probably have to extend the wires.

Did it that way this morning. Took Headlamp and Fog Lamp out. Could not see or even feel where the Horn was. Found the 2 Wires exiting the Loom behind the Headlamp. Cut them and reconnected using Lucas Brass Bullet Connectors and extended Wires to New Hella Horn. There’s a threaded hole in just the right place on the Inner Wing behind the Headlamp.

I decided to relocate the standard Audi horn into the wing using one of the Webasto / brake fluid reservoir location nuts as I do not have a Webasto. The loom has not been altered just fished out using the fog light method and reconnected to the horn..

This is the original location, fitted to the right hand end of the upper crash beam.

I only took the right fog light out and felt around to locate the cable and followed it onto the horn

I managed to add a second Bosch Fanfare (Hi frequency) close to the original without dismantling anything. Spliced into the existing lines to the horn in parallel, works great and sound much more purposefu!

You can see the Threaded Hole I used to Bolt my Horn to. Centre Left. The Cable Tie is pointing at it.

Picture also shows where my auxiliary (second) earth lead has been bolted to the chassis side of the engine mount and loops behind the MAF sensor onto the engine block.

Which are the Best Horns / best place to buy them from ? Twin Horns High & Low Tone ?
I've used these(£16) and prefer the tone to the Bosch below, it's fairly aggressive...
and these(which were £15 though currently unavailable - part number search may bear fruit)...

Just taken Delivery of a Pair of Bosch Windtone Fanfare Horns from Parts in Motion eBay Shop £13.09 Delivered Free. Instructions say to fit a RELAY. Is that strictly necessary on the A2. Is there not a Relay already ? Will fitting just one of the Pair without a Relay be OK please ?

Afternoon Steve,

Not here to help, more to absorb the information you get from other members.

When I remove my bumper to fit Headlamp Washer Bumper (once painted) I too am looking to upgrade the sound of the horn.

I have 2 pairs of Bosch Fanfares to wire in, of course only fitting 1 pair. I have a pair from an A8 and a pair from an A6. The connectors from each donor car are different, I guess one of them will be the same as the A2s connector. Hopefully it’ll be a simple case of plugging in the pair that has the correct connector and then locating both hi and low horns. I’m not planning on fitting an additional relay. I’ll be using what ever relay already exists.

I do understand that I’ll be asking the existing relay to do twice as much work but should be on as it’s not something that is active for long periods. In most cases it’ll only be used once a year at MOT time. I just want to have the peace of mind that if I do need to get someones attention, for what ever reason that may be, they do actually hear me.

This retrofit, for me is a couple of months away as waiting to get the new bumper painted.

Please do keep us all updated (include pictures) with how you tackle this as it will of course be of use to many others.

Kind regards,

Tom

Tom,

It might be a case of waiting until Timmus returns from his climbing trip to the Dolomites, when he is going to remove the A2 Front Bumper to access the Power Steering Pump Control Unit and clean up the connections.

Regards,

Steve

Wilco did a great write-up on fitting a new horn

Cheers Spike

Does anyone know if the A2 already has a suitable Horn Relay so I can just fit the 2 New Horns please ?
I did exactly the same as @wilco following his notes five years ago. Although not a avid horn user, it has never blown a fuse. As long as using the same harness and not trying to fit a set of "la cucharita" or "General Lee's" can't see one being required.

I know the twin tone horn cars have a relay, just never looked to see if the single tone ones do. I use a single tone and after I relocated it loud enough.
According to this it is relay No5
