How depressing....

Kinda sad to see this but all too common....saying that I wouldnt mind the o/s foglight and the nice headlight switch :D

Fair point - third party liability is a big factor.

But an A2 write off will give rise to a payout of a few hundred £; a new car several thousand £.

Which is still as nothing compared to the fees a few Legals would run up in a court case. The cover is not so much for the replacement of the material item, but the consequential actions and losses. For young drivers these days, the policy excesses are so high that many would get no more than a couple of hundred £ if their car is written off, if that, so that part of the payout is of very little consequence to the insurer.

TFG - I defer to your greater knowledge on this subject. So enlighten me as to how the premium on the new cars is so much lower?

Yes - more safety features - but that does not mean a 17 year old can't cause an accident giving rise to a massive claim.

Manufacturer subsidy? Insurer discount for massive volumes of business via the manufacturers / franchised dealers?

I agree and newer cars far more complicated so much more expensive to replace components / parts etc I hate to think what some of these parts on new cars actually cost ...

Follow your reasoning ULP - but I suppose when all these theoretical 17 year olds start putting their new Toyota Aygo / Citroen C1 and the like through hedges and into walls it'll even out ..........

Isn't there a system in France whereby young drivers who have 'incidents' are banished to 2 stroke Ligier micro-cars for a couple of years? Can't imagine that going down too well here!

Anyway - back to the thread - Murdo put it best that your picture - to most inhabitants of this country - is of just an old car being scrapped that has reached the end of its useful life.

I think there are about 10,000 A2's left taxed / sorn and probably just a few hundred people who regard them as as a future classic and remotely worth saving.

So unless we are all going to have about 20 each....... (yes I know, some people probably have already)

On the plus side there is going to be a glut of spare parts over the next few years!!
