How do you get the glovebox lid off?

The glovebox lid won't stay closed, how do I remove it without breaking anything so I can make an attempt at fixing it or fitting a replacement?

I've read enough of the threads to suspect that with the extremely brittle plastic in my car breaking the lid open will break it to bits, but no one actually says how to take it off.

If I remember right, you have to get the entire glovebox unit out to get the lid out. Pull the front passenger sill trim off (upwards from the back), and I think five screws hold the glovebox in. Do the ones in the footwell first and find some cushions etc. to support it on. The others are at the top, accessible with the lid open, you have to pull out the coin holder to get at one of them. The last part is disconnecting the light, this is why you support the whole unit so that you have the two hands available that you need. The lid comes off the box by removing the brass hinge pins, I think by driving them outwards from the middle.

If you haven't seen it, @Jeetesh did a very good write up here on fixing the internals of his glove box lid.

Here's the appropriate section of the workshop manual:

Just use the 'next page' or 'previous page' buttons to navigate through it.

The workshop manual describes the glove box in a LHD car.
