Hi daft question i know

How do you know what kind of service plane your on variable or long service ?

I have a 51 plate 1.4TDI (basic edition) covered 56000 miles and service light now on.

Also what is the best oil to use ?

And finally (sorry for all the questions) as the car is well our of waranty im thinking of using a independent VW garage to do the service - is this a wise idea ?

many thanks

Hi Chris
The owners manual ('Service Indicator' page 83 in my 2001 book) explains how to check the mileage to the next oil change but I don't think there is a way of telling if it is set on fixed or variable service.
For the TDi you need an oil which meets the VW 50700 spec. Castrol Edge 5W30 meets this and is available from Halfords - see link for more info
Note. Castrol also do other Edge grades specifically for diesels but they don't meet the VW spec.

A good independent VW garage would be fine, particularly if they service other A2's

Have a look at the service history, much more than 12 months / 10000 miles and you'll be on VSI, there should be a service at least every 48 months though; also oil spec should be min VW 505.01 as my similar aged A4 requires on a fixed service interval, I would however go for the latest spec you can get especially on a VSI as Spike said, reason, wrong oil has incorrect shear properties, this can and does lead to cams wearing the followers and damaging the injector units which sit below the cam (about £400 each to replace!!)

Hi chris
when the garage reset the service with vagcom that is when you can tell weather it is on variable or long service
