How obvious is the anti-roll bar knocking..?

Ive read most of the posts on the anti-roll bar / drop links type noises.

Just how obvious is the noise? / can anyone describe it. When I go over certain types of bumps i get what i have heard been described as a tapping noise (small man with hammer tapping on bonnet!), but it could well be something in the dash creaking (seems to be worse in the cold weather so i put it down to plastic being cold etc.) not sure whether im being paranoid.

Over speed humps or really uneven roads where there is lots of suspension movement etc I dont seem to have any noise whatsoever no knocking/clanging/scraping.

However when theres a particular type of bump say change in two road surfaces where the bump is felt as a harsh spike rather than a large suspension movement I seem to get a tapping from what sounds like the dashboard.

Sorry for the strange request of course I can jack the car up check the drop-links etc. just thought id get some input.

Cheers

In my experience, it's a loud clunk. It could be intermittent at first, but as the bar moves, you'll eventually get it every time you go over a bump.

The tapping from the dashboard could be the bonnet vibrating. Go to each top corner and if you press on the bonnet and you get movement, that's possibly it.

I had that problem and put some cardboard in the receivers that the bonnet prongs slide into which tightened it up. You only need a very small piece of card.

There is some way to adjust the receivers, but the I never bothered as the carboard works fine and I don't need to take the bonnet off that much.

Thanks for the reply ken, to be honest what im getting at the moment sounds exactly like i imagine the bonnett would sound if it was rattling up and down, light metallic rattle sound i will investigate.

I had a small knocking noise that I thought was the anti roll bar but after investigation I found that it was a broken ECG pipe on the exhaust. It was a very annoying tapping and would come on intermittently and felt as if it's coming from somewhere in the dash - it wasn't and cost me £110 for a new ECG pipe. I hope that's not your case but I thought that I would offer up this information as it also sounded like "a small man with a hammer"

thanks for the input guys. i think ive found it.

i can confirm that the drivers side of the bonnet by the top stay does indeed rattle with a note identical to that I can hear inside the car!

I will try to adjust and if not get the cardboard out. Just relieved its not something more.

Cheers
