How often to top up oil A2 1.4 Petrol?

Hi,

I've got a 1.4 Petrol A2 (May 2005), and have had it for 18 months.
Just recently, every 3 weeks (for the past 3 times) the oil min warning light has been coming on!
I put in 0.5 litres each time and do 400 miles a week!

I'm sure this isn't right! Anyone have the same problem or thinks this is abnormal?

Cheers!

Doesn't sound right at all! How does the level look on the dipstick after you have topped it up? (Leaving a few minutes for the new oil to drain down to the sump, of course...)

Thanks GrayB

I find it really hard to get a reading from the dipstick - bad design!
I checked about 5 minutes after I put it in, whilst the engine was cold!
I may try it later when I get home from work!
After 37 miles that is!
How long should I leave it after driving to check? Yes I know I should know this!
Never had to check it this often!

Appreciate your help!:)

I find checking the oil on my 1.4 petrol very difficult. I went to the dealer the other day and they checked it for me and put in around .25 l checked it in the morning from cold and I could then see the level was upto the top. The more I checked it the more readings I get different. I suggest that you take it to the dealer as it may be a faulty sensor. I had that happen to me so I called out VW asssit who checked and confirmed the oil level was ok. I had the oil light come on again a few months later and as I could not confirm the level I took it to the dealer who said I needed 1 l of oil as I had left it with the light coming on for too long. In jan this year oil light came on again so in went .75l of oil all ok again. Bottom line is get it checked by the dealer (they should not charge for this) Check out the many posts on this subject many posted by me over the many months. I am tending to use around .25l of oil per 1000 miles

Yep - .25 ltrs of oil per 1000 miles sounds about right for the 1.4 16V. You get used to carrying around a spare 1ltr bottle in the boot for those annoying beeps whilst in the outside lane of the motorway. Its amusing that my 120K MK3 Golf GTI does not use a single drop of oil yet the A2 has a slight alcoholic tendency with the black stuff. Does the diesel have the same habit?

Part of the oil consumption problem is attributed to the use of super slippy synthetic oil which makes it difficult for th piston rings to bed in. Not like the old days when VW filled the engines with re-processed used oil which was changed for decent stuff after 1000 miles. Maybe the idea of waiting 2 years before going back the the dealer is to give us time to save up for the first service.

Cheers Spike

yes I always carry a litre of oil in the car, last time my oil beep came on was driving on the motorway on the way back from bluewater. i always wait til I get home before adding the oil saves having to stop on the roadside. Think the oil sensor is very sensitive to oil level changes and when it beeps you still have plenty of oil in the sump.

Thanks for all your comments! I will indeed take it to the dealer and get it checked out!

You say 0.25lt per 1000, well I'm only doing 600 miles for that!

And yes A2Look you are right, my mistake, It was May 2004! Don't know where the time has gone - filling up the oil sump probably!

Will let you know how I get on!

Cheers!

Our TDI75 has used maybe 1.5 ltrs in 10,000+ miles. Never had the warning light come on either - perhaps it doesn't work? Or isn't fitted to the SE with no DIS - like the non-existant low washer warning light!!

Just rang the Audi dealer in Bolton, and they say it will need an 'oil consumption test' to the tune of £200!!!!!::eek:

Too much Audi! Cost me less in oil top-ups!

Anyone had this done?

Our first car asked for oil once, about a month before first service. Was almost three years old when it went and was still waiting for the second request.

This one is 17 months old and has not had any oil between changes - but does less stop start running.

Both did around 6-8k/yr

The "non DIS" SE does have an oil warning light.

Yes it is still under warranty! It's got another year left!
So should they be charging me for an oil consumption test then?

Maybe I should get an ADT out?!

My Audi dealer reckons on around .25l per 1000 miles but I am sure I use alot less just paranoid about the levels getting low so keep topping it up. Oil min light should come on if it gets low and mine did after around 4k after oil change. i put this down to the garage not putting enough oil in charged me for 4l of oil and I am sure the 1.4 petrol takes 4.5l of oil anybody know the oil capacity of the 1.4 petrol

Wallydog take it back to the dealer and ask them to check out the oil min sensor and get them to check for any leaks. I have never heard of the oil consumtion test and if there is one then it should be free under the warranty

Thanks Guys!

Will ring the dealer back and get it checked! It's due for it's break fluid change on the 12th May! So will get them to look then! I think I can hang on until then!

Will defo push for them to do it under warranty!

Will keep you updated!:)
