How to remove cluster gauge?

That rubber surface is peeling off badly and I fancy to remove it and respray it properly. Any guide on how-to as most topic I've found says it's difficult but I do t want to remove the whole dashboard, just the cluster. Cheers

There are two hex bolts inside the "hood" of the cluster. Then you can gently remove the hood.

Then there are three bolts holding the cluster in. one at the back in the centre and two more hidden behind the small flexible cover that sits between the steering column and the cluster, this lifts off (pull it forward first) be gentle with it, it can be fragile.

Watch out for those two hidden bolts you can easily drop them. I put a bit of "blue tack" on the end of the driver to try and stop them dropping.

Then you need to disconnect the connectors (the coloured clip lifts and pulls up to release the connector)

The explanation Steve has given you there is spot on. If you’re still after a little guidance I’m happy to accept a FaceTime/WhatsApp video call to take you through it.

It is a fairly simple process and doesn’t take long. I do actually have a spare set of instruments you can have which have perfect fascia, this will save your having to paint yours but entirely up to you. You can have the cluster for £15 plus £5 next day (MyHermes) delivery. If you was interested and paid this evening, the package would be at the local Hermes shop first thing in the morning. £20 total which is probably less than the cost of wet&dry paper, panel wipe, primer, paint and a matt lacquer.

Kind regards,

Tom

This could be a good longer-term solution .... but not a short-term fix unless the OP has VCDS, as the cluster requires coding to the car for it to start and run.

Sorry should have explained better, but thought it obvious. Basically what Bret has said. Buy mine opposed to painting and swap over the cluster fascia. Keeping original cluster so no VCDS. I also will help remove it over a video call just incase the OP is still unsure.

Kind regards,

Tom

Sorry, I jumped the gun really, going on knowledge rather than experience
But at least it's prompted a complete and thorough explanation, top marks to @Birchall's useful post ?

Hello, was it so that the asker was not interested in buying the cluster? Does it function? I may need a new one. Mine is black and have not figured out why. Being as the cluster acts as the main gateway between systems including immobilizer, my car won't start ? Any tips on figuring out how to get life(light) back into the guard/display?

That's great how-to, cheers Birchall.

Sorry for getting back this late, thanks for the offer, but I'm running a bit low on funds atm so I just have to leave it, thanks again.
