I bought a (pig) farm

After a more thorough investigation at the garage, it was found that the compression on one of the cylinders was 'a bit too low', as well as suspected high pressure fuel pump failure rather than the sensor.

There are no definite answers as to the reasons for the low compression or poor fuel delivery. To save costs, it was not investigated further and that's all we know.

The car also needs new brakes all round.

Repair work was, therefore, not carried out and the project has unfortunately been abandoned.
May have been the problem mine had - blown cylinder and cracked head gasket. All fine after it was sent off for rebore and new head gasket, but it was just under £1,500. But I don't regret it though as I plan to keep her and she has still cost me less than I'd lose on depreciation on a newer car.
Can understand you not doing it though

Don't blame you for abandoning the project, the sensible course of action for a non DIY owner, too many serious/unkown faults, that sound serious money to put right. Great pity after your time and effort cleaning the car and garage costs, but at least you tried, sorry it turned out this way.

You could now put the car in the Marketplace on here, somebody may be interested in a project, alternatively @A2Steve may be interested.

I'm actually in the middle of nowhere, AKA Anglesey, so I doubt if anyone's near to be honest. If you know anyone nearby who knows about these engines, I'd be glad to know.

Anyway, I'll bear in mind all the above, and we'll see what happens tomorrow, and yes I promise not to break and will offer up for sale if it doesn't work out.

Cheers
Hi Scumfrog,
You are just up the road from me in Colwyn Bay, I too have an fsi and have spent a small fortune getting mine running right. If it is an abandoned project, give me a shout, I may well be interested in it...I'm always after a challenge!!!!!!
I use a local indi garage, who are pretty damned good to be honest, they now have a small circle of A2 owners that use them due to my recommendation, for some reason all the others are straight forward jobs, my keeper always throws a swerve ball at them...snapped bolts, rounded nuts, incorrect locking wheel nut with the car lol, you name it they've had it, and its always on my car!
All the best, stay away from Llangefni! Andy

I guess it could be argued that an FSI with a rebuilt engine is worth more than £1500, but with a (supposedly) a good runner with MOT on ebay at the moment for £1150, there would only be the one obvious choice for me...

I am somewhat put off FSI's, at this point however.

It wasn't that much time and effort or money to be honest, the potential is for it to escalate was too much of a risk however.

When I go to market, there's nothing in there and no way of posting that I can see.

don't give up on fsi's that one unfortunately was past your limit, but iv got one and I think its a cracking car always makes me smile, iv not driven an a2 tdi but I driven cars (polo +Ibiza) with the same tdi lump and the same petrol engine 1.4, I cant express having driving all the engine the fsi as frustrating as it may be is really enjoyable car, just a case of picking one that been looked after and your away as long as you continue to give it love

In case you want to know how to upgrade to the market place, then the following should help

  1. from the menu bar at the top of the screen, select your picture icon(on computer this will also have your name next to it)
  2. from the drop down list provided select 'Account Upgrades'
  3. You will then see the option to click the link to pay the £2 upgrade fee
  4. Please state a price.
Cheers

Dave.

you know name me a car what doesn't have issue's the a2 tdi aint exactly perfect, turbo, dmf, egr, and other bits, fsi gets a bit to much bad press in my opinion and the pro boost map has seen to a lot of the problems with them

I do agree with your point in general, and I don't want to be argumentative, but I would have to mention that my Mazda MX5 which I bought for two grand three years ago with 115,000 miles on it (but in almost as new condition), has never needed anything doing.

It is starting to rust however! ?

Same with an MR2 I had many years ago - amazingly well put together and reliable.

An FSI is never going to be as reliable as a mid 90's to early 00's Japanese case, they were designed to withstand the apocalypse, but the FSI can be a reliable daily driver. Prior to the Pro Boost map being available, I would never have touched one (and I hindsight would have kept a few I let go) but they can now be a contender for A2 engine choice if you want more power than the 1.4 can give and more refinement than the TDI is able to provide.

I'd certainly be questioning what I would do with the car, I would personally offload it to Clackers who will either fit an engine (I think you've got an FSI there?) or part it out for use in the club and then go looking for a better base car to start with.

I'm kind of thinking of keeping it for a short while before deciding.
Possibly wait until a decent engine turns up, but maybe that would be a can of worms best left unopened.
The body is in A1 condition so I'm a bit reluctant to let go or break for the sake of what will inevitably be a relatively small amount of money.

You will see the marketplace when you join it, just follow the joining instructions of Special Edition, it is a vibrant part of the club, indeed without it many of our A2's would be scrapped as uneconomic to repair, also a source of reasonable cost upgrades as well as a platform to sell and buy.

Apologies to you and @Clackers I should have thought of the obvious last night being so relatively local to each other, but I see you are in touch so it augers well.

Andy

Photos as requested.
you'll note it's not the cobalt blue, but another blue.
The interior looks grey but it's black.

Fact is, I'm very new to these cars, so I've no idea where I will go with it yet. I've already got another working one, so that's zero to 2 A2's in less than 7 days!

It was less than a couple of weeks ago that I was looking for "any cheap runabout" because we need one as a second car, and came across a 1.4 petrol locally, which had too many issues to even consider giving £250 for it. Then I remembered that a mate had this one sat in his yard, so I went to inspect, as the more I found out about A2's, the more I decided that they were the car I wanted. Even though I'd previously derided this one as a stupid looking old ladies' car.

But anyway, I am now back to thinking that one day I might fix this one. I think a lot of it depends on how well the interior cleans up, which has to be the next job, and is worth a few hours at least. But it could be a few years before I get around to changing an engine, I have so many non-motoring projects on the go. It will be put aside for a while to see how things pan out.

It needs -
possibly new engine or rebuild
huge crack along bottom of windscreen, not MOT failure although I don't personally see how that can be possible.
new brakes all round, including a couple of calipers.
wheels heavily scuffed
mileage discrepancy between an MOT and a retest - lost 4,000 miles in one month, although I think it looks like a mis-read.
no service history.

I can reassure you about the interior. If you spend a few hours with a vacuum cleaner, followed by scrubbing the seats and carpets with a cap full of Stardrops in a bucket of warm water, it will come up almost like new. I've seen many A2s that looked much worse than yours and every one of them has looked good after a bit of attention.

That's Mauritius Blue, a lovely and sought-after shade which, like the inside, will look great with TLC.
@Proghound
You're not an Estate Agent are you? "Sought after" indeed.
Still, nice to know, I have a "sought after" A2 (but, aren't they all). Does it being an FSI negate the sought after status though?
Mauritius Blue is a great colour?.
Mac.
