I never thought I would think of an A2

I am new to this site - and am thinking of buying an A2 for daily use . Looked at a very nice 1.6 Sport with a full spec but the colour was wrong .

For a combination of economy and performance what do I buy - plus the Open Sky looks great + leather + climate . And it has to be black

Thoughts welcomed

Thanks

I used to own a 993 C4S, and now I have an A2 TDI (90) Sport as a daily driver. I've really grown to love it, and for a 100 mile round trip daily commute, and for long journeys the A2 is great.

Others will comment on OpenSky, but I preferred the 90PS diesel to the petrol. I also like the firm suspension, sports seats and 17" wheels on the sport version.

I also like the fact that when Walter Rohrl the chief Porsche driver as interviewed a couple of years ago, he said that despite his having access to a great range of high performance Porsches, he had just as much fun driving his 90PS A2 diesel! The quote was in GT Purely Porsche magazine.

I'd try and get a double DIN dash (in case you ever fancy retro-fitting Audi sat nav - cheaper and less harrowing than swapping the complete dash).

All in all, I really like the A2. And the fuel economy balances off a little the thirst of my 928GT!

Good luck if you decide to go for it.

Should i be worried

I too am new here and thinking of buying an A2, in fact will be looking at one tomorrow. It is a TDi sport 2003 52reg, what i am concerned about is this, although the guy has owned it for nearly two years it has had 4 previous owners, one of which was the guys wife. Should I be worried about this or not? Could others have had problems with the car an moved it on quickly? Possibly the hard ride has put some off? Any thoughts would be welcome.

4 owners in 5 years (possibly 3 if it was a pre-reg), is nothing to worry about.

Check it carefully, look for a bit of service history, check it drives straight and isn't bent or dented (expensive to fix in aluminium) and you should be onto a winner, price dependent.

For a 5 year old car, mileage up to 60-80k miles is perfectly acceptable and the diesel variants are only just passed the full run-in at 50k miles!

Take someone else with you too, to avoid getting shiny car syndrome too!

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for the advice, the car's only got 41k showing, and he wants £7250. Will soon see if it is any good, leaving home shortly, it's a 2 hour drive from here.

A bit apprehensive as I have never owned a diesel before, and I currently run a 12 year old Golf GTI which I've had for 9 years. Not sure if it will suit me.

Well not what i was expecting, Disappointed, not as described. First impressions were good then noticed misted-up front headlight, broken fog light, assorted blemishes. seat had pilled badly for a car with only 41k on the clock. It also was very disappointing to drive, didn't go like it should have. So all in all not worth the money, so the search continues.

Hi Richard,

I was expecting to pay up to £7000. So far I've looked at a:-

1. TDi SE that went quite well (would have had to re-map to keep me happy), but the paint work was scraped down one side.

2. Petrol 1.4 Se (was pleasantly suprised at how well it went, but it seems TDi's are the favourate on this site) anyway, bonnet and bumper had been re-sprayed , badly.

3. TDi sport, (yesterday) which as i explained in my last post, was not a shed by any means but poor nontheless. Even if it had been ok, not sure about the ride quality, think my dentist bills would soar with all the fillings rattling loose.

Not sure where I am going now, must say after Golf gti, performance could be an issue, will try a couple more A2's but it is looking like I will be going elsewhere. (possibly Golf mk4 GT TDi) Other than that I haven't a clue as i don't like much out there. If it wasn't for the fact i need 4 doors the choice would be easier. Thankfully I'm not in any hurry as my Golf will last for years yet. So maybe I will wait till the spring and see what happens.

Should be quite easy to get a nice car, if you can travel to look then you will find lots of A2's

If I was you, pick an A2 which is 2002 or newer, TDI SE, look out for one with full DIS. Keep looking and one will come up.
