if i remove my front seat will the airbag light go on?

I need to transport a large item in the A2 and want to remove the front passengers seat and want to know will the airbag light go on and if so how can i prevent this. If it does come on, does the connector have a spring clip in it which bridges the wires and therefore tells the ECU that there is no bag on the end of the wire or does it see a resistance of the bag or some othere method? I dont want to remove it only to have the light on... any ideas appreciated

If you remove the seat, you will have a fault light on and you'll also have a live airbag sat around, so be careful with static discharge (don't wear nylon drawers!!).

The light will have to be reset when you refit the seat and you'll need special spline bits to physically do the removal.

Cheers,

Mike

AHHHHHHH! is that's what the wires are for going to the underside of the front seats-never had airbags before.
thanks

Sounds a lot of bother David unless you have the spline bits Mike refers to, VCDS to reset the fault code and youre very confident with car electrics. Many of the hire places will do a 4 hour rental on a van unless you absolutely must use your A2 for the job! :D

If you wind the seat back right the way back, it's amazing how much you can get in and there's never been a time when I've needed to take a front seat out.

As Murdo says, it's a real pain to have to do a seat removal for the sake of a single load.

Cheers,

Mike

thanks for the replies
i have torqx and spline keys so no problem there
i would like to use my trusty A2 rather than a sweaty old van
it would be interesting to know HOW the ECU knows to switch the light on and then maybe think of a way to defeat this mechanism. I.e if the ECU sees a certain resistance or a closed circuit then either bridge the connector or insert a resistor

Not quite off topic, if changing the seats (e.g. se to sport) would disconnecting the battery before disconnecting and reconnecting the airbag prevent the light from coming on?

Yep. Disconnect the battery. You should do this anyway when connecting / disconnecting the air bags....

Make sure you reconnect the airbag up though before you reconnect the battery

Its more a case of when the ignition is turned back on, you car checks the system for faults and if the seats not connected then it flags that up, it was happening to us at work before Christmas we was fitting alarms on rental VW's and had to test the alarm before we fitted it all back up (incase of faulty units) and we had the glove box out which had the passenger airbag switch in it and so how we got around it was to remove that from the glove box and re-connect it to test the system, then fit it back in the glove box when we had finished saved alot of time (when you think we was fitting some 25+ alarms a day)

Cheers Phil

Strange that.

The first time i took mine out, i didnt take the battery off.
Removed the seat / airbag etc and then replaced and it flagged up the airbag error.
