I'm back !

Hi,
10 years ago, if not more than that, I replaced the horn with twin "mini fanfare" from Bosch.
When I started to use again the A2 2 month ago, the sound from the horn was weak, IMO only one of the two was still working, and not very well. Last week it completely stopped working, so I ordered a replacement set, and this time I bought a slightly different model, Bosch Windtone. Two-tone aswell. I chose it mainly because the price was good, 27€ delivered. Otherwise if I had found an "Evolution fanfare" set, I would have preferred it over the Windtone.

Yesterday they arrived and I fitted them. It turned out that they were quite larger than the "mini" (sounds obvious :) )
In spite of this, there is still enough room to fit them in place of the "mini".
Note that in a FSI (at least LHD), there's no need to remove the bumper. The 2 horns fit on the same side (right, passenger, thus driver for you), one above the other.
It's not the more relaxed job because you need 2 hands in a tight space to secure them, but there are worse tight and blind jobs ; removing/refitting the central blower for instance.

I dind't take a picture of the horns in situ but will do it next time I remove the bonnet. I was in a hurry to go out after that.
On the way, I tested the horn more than required 😋

Hi,
a little update...
I'm still collecting the parts before the big plunge.
Now I have the A3 8P steering module, so for the MFSW conversion, I just need some connectors/pins/cables.
I have the AMI CAN module but not the loom. I think I'll have to order the one from Kufatec and cannibalize the connectors I'm after (one in particular) plus some cables : because of being "plug and play", it is too bulky with its 2 quadlock connectors. Indeed, as I also will add Bluetooth and maybe a video input module (for reversing camera), I can't add all those plug&play quadlock conectors in series 😵‍💫

Does someone know if the connectors alone or (part of) the loom are available form Audi ?

And this one (AMI side) :

For the BT module (not yet arrived), I'll order a P&P loom too.

Since I woke up the A2, the airbag light was on.
VCDS's verdict was : "65535". That's the airbag control module. I don't how and why it occured...
The fault code is impossible to erase for safety reasons. I tried first to cure that with a device said to be able to erase the internal error code. Apparently it worked for many people, but not for me. So I bought a 2nd hand airbag controller on ebay ads Germany.
It was by chance the same version as mine, "E" (part nr is 8Z0 959 655 E), well, that's by far the most common, because I learned after that that the versions were related to the airbags setup of the car : with or without sideguards and/or with or without passenger deactivation key in glovebox, both extras I don't have on my A2.
I fitted it today and I was very happy that the airbag light lit off :)
BTW, removing the central tunnel trim is a pig ! In the end, I stopped at the point where I thought I had to remove both front seats to be able to take that trim off, and I managed to replace the airbag controller through the handbrake opening in the tunnel trim. A bit tricky but doable, only 3 screws to loose ; with the trim being free, so it can be lifted by 5-10cm when needed, otherwise it would be too tight (12 T30 screws to loose : 2 at the top rear, 2 at the top front, 4 each side on the front).
While I was at it, I've already cut a rectangular hole in the tunnel trim for the wireless charger, it's one less thing to do for later.
Now that I think about it, I should have started with that ! It would have made the replacement of the airbag controller easier 😟

To be continued...

Hello Fabrice,

For your infotainment looms, there might be a simpler option which is to contact Bart at VAG Retrofits who will be able to supply all you need soldered onto just 1 PnP harness adapter. He can also send you the separate looms labelled up for you to solder into the existing ISO/MiniISO connectors to save on the bulk. Room behind the RNS-E within the A2 is certainly lacking. Get in touch with him and mention you’re part of our fine community for some discount. Not too sure about sending out of the UK but you can have that discussion with him.

The remaining connectors you’re after for your MFSW retrofit are available either new or found in quite a few VAG models in breakers yards, might even have some hiding deep in my spare box in the garage but won’t be able to confirm for a few days.

Glad to see another A2 will soon be sporting a QI wireless charging module. It’s such a nice addition which I really like, fits just right in the centre stowage tray.

Kind regards,

Tom

Thanks Tom for your helpful tips once again ;)
I will certainly get in touch with Bart !
He will probably be able to answer this one, but do you know if it's possible to have at the same time a 6-CD changer, A BT module, an AMI module and a video input module ?
Indeed, the QI charger will be soon fitted. The loom is on the way from China ; when arrived, I'll fit it. Incidentally, it's a bit ironical because my phone can't charge wirelessly :p But my wife's, my son's and my daughter's phones do. I have ordered an adapter to convert mine to QI, not sure that isn't crap but it's just a few euros...

Afternoon Fabrice,

I’m sure Bart will be able to give you an exacting answer but from a coding point of view I don’t see why you couldn’t continue to utilise the boot mounted CD changer.

The only experience I have with the boot mounted CD changer is from my previous commuter but that had none of the RNS-E peripherals you mention, plus I was running a 192 (Mk1) unit back then. Cannot see why a reduction in functionality would be included in the later more superior head unit though. .

Both Project OEM and 250 don’t have the boot mounted CD changer so I’d be wrong to state anything without knowing for certain. I’ve also not installed a multimedia module so far, only have the AMI and BT Tel modules in both A2s. I know you may run into issues for a RVC functionality due to this only being available if the RNS-E is coded as an R8 or Lamborghini, thus switching over to CAN from K-Line diagnostics. There are of course ways around this though with custom firmware.

Once I’ve completed the necessary modifications to my PDC set up to finally achieve a stable OPS display on ColorMFA, then will I concentrate on a multimedia interface for RVC. Hopefully I’ll be able to have the ghost/faded OPS display (no A2 image available though) within the camera feed. It’s a task for next year now though.

More than happy to help out where I can.

Kind regards,

Tom
