Chat I'm new here and looking for advice, what is something you wish you knew before buying your A2?

The 1.4i gearbox is a bit "short" for that, though it will let you do 45kph in 5th
Yea, I heard some people say that they'd wish for a 6th gear in the A2, and I think that it would make a lot of sense too. But you know "Leben ist kein Wunschkonzert" ("Life ain't a "request concert""). Yea I think you are right, it really boils down to how lucky you are, buying cars isn't like buying a phone or a computer where you can expect pretty much equal performance from all products of the same kind. I think the real solution for me is simply moving to the city I will be working in. An idea struck my mind today actually : if I move there I could simply buy a moped and drive around with that, by that I could easily level up my SF-Klasse, (car insurance rating) and have an easier time buying a car when I start to earn money after graduating from college (cheaper insurance while at the same time having higher income).

Edit : If I bought an A2 75 right now and insured it, insurance alone would cost me around 2000 EUR a year and the A3 8L would cost me like 2700 while the newest Porsche 911 would be like 1700 because I have SF-0

Thanks for your insightful posts! appreciated

2000EUR/year must be the full-coverage insurance. Ask for basic insurance only. I pay 150EUR/year (20000km/year) for that.

It does not cover your own car if you are 100% responsible for the accident, but consider yourself as a self-insurancer as you can fix alot for 1850EUR/year. And simply drive responsible.

This has worked just fine for me the last 10 years. I do not even lock my car; no one is interested in a A2 anyway

About EURO regulations, all A2 models since around July 2003 became Euro 4. This is said to have been achieved through EGR and some injection system remapping, so it's not, as per some other models that changed emissions rating within their lifespan, a mere matter of the newer standard not existing at the start of production, solvable through bureaucracy alone - which also means that it does not matter when it was registered but when it was made! (I've stumbled upon a handful examples sold as a 2004/5 that were Euro 3, because they were manufactured in early 2003 but only registered later - so if it's especially important to you, double-check on the registration ensuring that the Euro directive cited, either 98/69/CE or 1999/96/CE, is followed by a B).
If you really care about future-proofing, even if a Euro 4 diesel is fine where you are I'd consider opting for petrol, which is going to be outlawed much later down the line.

Tell me you don't live where I study without telling me you don't live where I study

Audi/VW group «fix» any Euro class with some magic software hehe.

Hehe live in Norway. No one steals an A2, and if someone want to break into the car for some odd reason, it is better if they just open the door instead of breaking the glas or mess up doorlock incl destroying the door panel.

Wait I made a mistake it's actually 2500 EUR for the 1.4 TDI 90
I accidentally selected the 90 in the screenshot tho
Edit: when I change it to the 75 it gives me a quote of 2300 EUR
Edit2: Even I select the 75 and change the mileage to 10k it gives me a quote of 1950 EUR

I mean, the best proof of stats being cheated on is cars like the A2 being undefeated in real-world fuel efficiency despite the paper claiming massive leaps forward....
I think modern cars like the Polo could beat the A2 if they were as light as the A2. But the people simply don't want efficency, they want comfort. No wonder SUVs are selling like hot cakes.

Those numbers seem off to me. Go for a comparison site. TDI90 starts at ~1400€/year there.
Interestingly enough, distance (e.g. 30k vs. 40k) doesn't appear to make much of a difference.
Neither does the question of which A2 engine - 1.4i starts at 1300€.

I think I started out on about 700€/year for full coverage (Vollkasko) of 8k though I'd had my license for a few years of barely any driving at that point. There's gotta be some metric there that drives the price up a lot - might be the relatively recent license?

A2 fuel numbers if not the 3L's should easily be reachable even by heavier modern cars. A 95hp Polo can do 4.5l/100km for sure.
That's just not available for <5k or even 10k.
Even a 150hp diesel modern Passat will do the same 4l/100km as a TDI90 A2.

I'm pretty sure a study proved that, over the last decades, the increased demand for horsepower has completely nullified the gains in efficiency.
Going to go with that line when someone calls out my Golf for sputtering its lungs onto their windshield.

Go for a comparison site
After 1 year of holding the license I can get SF 0.5 which makes the 40k / year 1.4 TDI 75 only cost 1600 at ADAC
I found an insurance company which offers 1850 right now called HDI but idk if it's legit, I mean I would*t buy it right now anyway, I'd buy it after holding the license for 1 year because right now I can't afford it.
Edit after 2 years of holding I would get 1230 and after 3 years 1130 and after 5 around 900

It depends on what you want to use the car for and your budget.
You need to understand that the car is at least 17 years old and the parts start to brake, even those that are not the known problematic parts in A2 (which are a lot :)).
I am checking mobile.de from time to time for A2 and the prices range from 500 EUR up to 10.000 EUR. Normal (thus high, since the car is already so old) milleage cars that look decent are between 2.000 and 3.000 EUR. Lower mileage cars are already around 5.000 EUR mark. Now, if you love A2 and would be somehow a project car, than go for it. But if you need just a normal car for a normal everyday transportation I would go for a newer cars for that sum of money. Polo, Fabia, Fiesta, etc. These newer cars will have much less material fatique (rubber, plastic part brakeing due to the fact that they are old), will have much less mileage, etc. You add also the fact that Audi A2 is quite rare and some parts are discontinued, this is just a final nail to the coffin for Audi A2 to buy and use as a normal everyday car IF you are buying a car. If you already own one and it works, that is a different situation. ;)
Despite all of that I love my A2 and I will not sell it, but I will use it only as a weekend, fun car. :)

Can you give us more details on how a Euro 3 A2 TDI can be upgraded to Euro 4 please? We thought that the Euro class that the car was built with could not be changed.
Mac.
No need for an upgrade. 1.2 TDIs homologated as Euro 3 actually fulfil the emission requirements for Euro 4, and it can be proven by ordering a copy of COC (certificate of conformance) from Audi. Showing it was sufficient to get a German green emission sticker normally issued to Euro 4 vehicles.
